Barcelona and Girona have reportedly advanced talks to seal the deal for Oriol Romeu, who has agreed on personal terms.

According to a report by Spanish outlet SPORT, Oriol Romeu is a step closer to joining Barcelona. The Blaugrana and Girona have advanced the discussions over a possible deal for the cultured Spanish midfielder. Meanwhile, the Catalan giants have an agreement on personal terms with the player.

Oriol Romeu returned to his homeland last summer after a long spell in England. His first foray into the Premier League came with Chelsea, where he could not become a regular. But the 31-year-old found a stable footing after moving to Southampton, where he spent seven years. And he joined Girona in the early stages of the 2022/23 season.

The cultured Spanish midfielder has made 34 appearances thus far for Girona while chipping in with two goals. And Romeu’s progress at Estadio Montilivi has captured the attention of his former club Barcelona. The reigning La Liga champions are now closing in on re-signing the experienced midfielder this summer.

Sergio Busquets’s departure has left a gaping hole in the Barcelona midfield. And while they have signed Ilkay Gundogan, they must land a holding midfielder. Several candidates have thus popped up on Barcelona’s radar. But most of the options are beyond their budget for the summer transfer window.

Martin Zubimendi and Joshua Kimmich are Xavi Hernandez’s preferred targets for the holding midfield berth. But both players are too expensive for Barcelona. Oriol Romeu has thus emerged as a viable target for Barcelona. And recent reports have suggested they are prioritising securing his services.

There have also been suggestions that the cultured Spanish midfielder is keen on rejoining Barcelona. And he has already agreed on personal terms with the Blaugrana. Meanwhile, the reigning La Liga champions have advanced talks with Girona over a possible summer move.

So Barcelona’s expectations to seal the deal quickly should materialise in the coming days. And Romeu will become Barcelona’s latest signing of the summer transfer window. It will be interesting to see if they return to the market for another player after landing the 31-year-old.
