Barcelona are reportedly looking to complete a deal to sign 31-year-old midfielder Oriol Romeu from Girona in the coming week.

According to a report from Spanish publication SPORT, Barcelona are hoping to seal the signing of Oriol Romeu for a fee of around €8 million. The deal is expected to be done by next week.

The former Barcelona academy graduate left the club in 2011 after failing to establish a foothold in the senior team. But the Blaugrana have chosen to bring him back to the club. The opportunity to return to his boyhood club will be an attractive option for the defensive midfielder, and he will look to make his mark next season.

It is no secret that Barcelona need to add more quality and depth in the middle of the park, and Romeu should prove to be a quality acquisition. The 31-year-old is an experienced player who has proven his quality across multiple leagues.

The Blaugrana recently parted ways with club legend Sergio Busquets, and they will have to replace him adequately. While there is no doubt that the 31-year-old Girona midfielder is a quality player, he will not be able to fulfil the void left by Busquets. However, he will certainly add physicality and defensive discipline to the Barcelona midfield.

The Catalan giants have recently acquired the services of Ilkay Gündogan on a free transfer as well. And the German international will help them control the tempo of the game and add creativity in the middle of the park.

Barcelona had an impressive 2022/23 campaign, and they ended up winning the league title ahead of Real Madrid. However, they were quite disappointing in the European competitions, and Xavi Hernandez will want to do well in the UEFA Champions League next term.

Barcelona will have to bring in the necessary reinforcements in order to bridge the gap with the european elite. The Blaugrana are going through financial problems, and they need to sign players for a reasonable price.

Romeu is an experienced player who would be a bargain for the reported €8 million. If the 31-year-old can hit the ground running, he could be an important player for Barcelona next season. For now, the reigning La Liga champions are looking to finalise the deal to sign him by next week.
