Manchester United could acquire the services of Argentine World Cup-winning goalkeeper Emiliano Martinez for £40 million.
According to a report by Football Insider, Manchester United are keen on having Emiliano Martinez in their ranks. The 30-year-old shot-stopper has gone from strength to strength over the past few seasons and is currently amongst the best in the business.
Martinez had an exceptional FIFA World Cup 2022. He was one of the main reasons for Argentina’s triumph on the global stage. He has been doing wonders for his national team and has helped lift both the World Cup and the Copa America.
The former Arsenal shot-stopper had hardly put a foot wrong for Aston Villa in the recently concluded season. He was involved in a total of 37 matches and managed to keep 13 clean sheets. Martinez’s exceptional performances over the past few seasons have not gone unnoticed. Quite a few clubs have been linked with the 30-year-old shot-stopper.
While his contract at Villa Park runs until the summer of 2027, the 30-year-old does not have the best of relations with manager Unai Emery. The duo do not get along well since their time together at Arsenal. As a result, Martinez could be open to the idea of leaving the club. Meanwhile, Manchester United could be a potential destination for the Argentine World Cup winner.
The Red Devils are in a complicated situation with their current number one, David de Gea and they might be all set to part ways with him. If he ends up leaving, Manchester United could sign Martinez to replace the Spain international. And the World Cup winner has a price tag of £40 million, with Aston Villa expecting a bid.
The 32-year-old shot-stopper’s contract runs out in a few days’ time. And, as per reports, de Gea had signed an extension with lowered wages before Manchester United backed out and did not counter-sign it. Post that, they tried to reach an agreement on a new proposal with an even lower salary. But, the player has not agreed to it.
With De Gea all set to be a free agent in a few days’ time, Manchester United have started looking for potential replacements. Inter Milan’s Andre Onana and Aston Villa’s Martinez are two potential options for the Red Devils.
Martinez has all the qualities to be Manchester United’s number one. He has won numerous titles of late and has been in red-hot form. The 30-year-old is currently valued at around £40 million mark and a fee in that region could help United sign him.
