Liverpool will have the slight advantage while pursuing Celta Vigo midfielder Gabri Veiga, a target for Barcelona and Chelsea.

According to a report by Spanish journalist Oscar Mendez, Barcelona, Chelsea, and Liverpool are keen on signing Gabri Veiga in the summer transfer window. But the Reds hold the advantage in the battle for the Celta Vigo midfielder’s signature. Meanwhile, the Spaniard has a release clause worth €40 million in his contract with the Galician club.

Gabri Veiga has established himself as one of the best young midfielders in La Liga following an excellent 2022/23 season. The 21-year-old started the campaign as a member of Celta Vigo’s reserve side. But he took little time to become a pivotal figure for the Andalusian club’s first team.

The Spanish midfielder turned out 39 times across all competitions for Celta Vigo, chipping in with 11 goals and four assists. And Veiga’s contributions helped the Galician club remain in La Liga after flirting with relegation during the run-in. Meanwhile, the youngster’s progress has not gone unnoticed, capturing the attention of Barcelona, Chelsea, and Liverpool.

Reports earlier this month suggested Barcelona had overtaken the other suitors in the race to sign Veiga. But Barcelona’s interest in the Spaniard is somewhat perplexing, considering they need a holding midfielder. In addition, it is unclear if they can afford to pay €40 million and trigger his release clause.

Meanwhile, Chelsea and Liverpool recently submitted enquiries to sign the Spanish midfielder. And Oscar Mendez has claimed that the Reds hold the advantage in the race to sign the youngster. But Chelsea will hope to usurp the Merseyside club as the battle continues to get hotter.

Both Chelsea and Liverpool are in a healthy-enough financial situation to pay €40 million for Veiga. While the Blues need to scour the market for a replacement for Mason Mount, the Reds need to bolster their midfield unit. And Liverpool will hope to capitalise on the situation and make the move for the 21-year-old.

Apart from Barcelona, Chelsea, and Liverpool, Real Madrid, Manchester City, and Newcastle United are also keen on signing the youngster. It will be interesting to see if any other suitor can steal a march on Liverpool for Veiga’s signature.
