Chelsea in pole position to sign Andre Onana

Chelsea have been linked with a move for 27-year-old Inter Milan goalkeeper Andre Onana, a target for Manchester City.

Andre Onana has established himself as a key player for Inter Milan. And a report from Calciomercato claims that Chelsea are now in pole position to sign the 27-year-old, although they will face competition from Manchester City. Inter Milan will demand €40 million to part ways with him.

Onana was outstanding for Inter Milan this past season, and he helped them reach the final of the Champions League. Apart from his short-stopping ability, his ability to break the lines with his passing makes him an invaluable asset.

Chelsea have Edouard Mendy and Kepa Arrizabalaga as their goalkeepers right now. But both players have been quite underwhelming, with Mendy, in particular, expected to leave this summer. The Senegal international has fallen down the pecking order at Stamford Bridge, and he needs to leave to play regular football.

Onana would be a major upgrade if Chelsea managed to pull it off. Apparently, the Inter Milan goalkeeper could be signed for a fee of around €40 million, and it would represent a major bargain for the Blues. It remains to be seen whether Chelsea can fend off the competition from Manchester City and secure the services of the Cameroon goalkeeper.

Onana is in his peak years, and he could be a key player for Chelsea in the coming seasons. The goalkeeper has certainly proven his quality in Serie A and UCL. He is good enough to succeed in the Premier League as well.

The opportunity to join a big Premier League club like Chelsea will be an attractive option for Onana. So it remains to be seen how the situation develops. That said, Manchester City are also one of the wealthiest clubs in the world and have an ambitious project. It will not be a surprise if Onana had his head turned by the interest from the Premier League champions.

In addition to that, Manchester City can offer him UCL football next season, whereas Chelsea finished 12th in the league table and won’t be competing in Europe next year. Onana will want to join a club capable of winning major trophies, and Manchester City have just won the treble this season.
