Arsenal recently initiated contact to discuss the possibility of signing Manchester City defender Joao Cancelo, a target for Barcelona.

Fabrizio Romano has told Give Me Sport that Joao Cancelo is a top target for Arsenal. And the Gunners have initiated the discussions to sign the Manchester City defender in the summer transfer window. The Portuguese international is also a target for Barcelona.

Joao Cancelo has an important decision to make in the summer transfer window. The 29-year-old must decide where he will spend the final peak years of his career. And with Manchester City ready to part ways with him, a summer departure is on the cards. In addition, Bayern Munich will not trigger the option to sign him permanently for £61 million.

The Portuguese international has a solid tally of three goals and 11 assists in 47 appearances this season. Yet Cancelo’s future is uncertain heading into the summer transfer window. But the player’s stock remains high, with several high-profile clubs, including Barcelona and Arsenal, keen on signing him.

Barcelona will head into the summer transfer window knowing they must sign a top-class right-back. Joan Laporta has also revealed the same, suggesting the Catalan giants want to end their right-back woes once and for all. And Cancelo’s name ranks high on Barcelona’s shortlist for this summer.

Barcelona recently opened talks to sign the 29-year-old, with Manchester City ready to cash in on him. But the Blaugrana cannot afford to secure Cancelo’s services if the Premier League champions continue to demand £61 million for him. And recent reports have suggested that the Catalan giants are behind Arsenal in the race to sign him.

Unlike Barcelona, Arsenal will target the Portuguese international to bolster the left-back options. Kieran Tierney faces an uncertain future at the Emirates as he wants to resurrect his stuttering career. And Arsenal will turn to Cancelo if the Scottish international departs in the summer transfer window. Fabrizio Romano has now revealed that the Gunners have established contact to hash out a deal.

Talks are underway between the parties involved. And with Arsenal holding the edge in the race, they will fancy their chances of beating Barcelona to Cancelo’s signature. For now, the 29-year-old is closing in on leaving Manchester City permanently this summer.

Arsenal are not Dads Army. It’s against Arsenals recently new policy to ignore players over 26 years old unless they are valued into the initial £20 million bracket, with the rest being add-ons to games played. This is a fact. So unless he would cost £20 million plus add-ons Arsenal will not be buying this 29 year old player.
