Real Madrid attacker Marco Asensio is reportedly closing in on joining Aston Villa, with Arsenal and other suitors falling behind in the chase.

According to a report by Spanish outlet MARCA, Marco Asensio will likely join Aston Villa in the summer transfer window. The Villans have edged clear of Arsenal and other suitors in the race to sign the Real Madrid attacker. And he finds the project at Villa Park to be exciting.

Marco Asensio has not fulfilled the prophecy from when he joined Real Madrid from RCD Mallorca in July 2015. The Spaniard should have been the long-term successor to Gareth Bale, considering he was one of the best young players in the world eight years ago. But a long-term knee injury in 2019 derailed his career somewhat, stunting his progress considerably.

Nonetheless, the 27-year-old has gradually improved and produced impressive numbers in the last two seasons. And he has contributed to 20 goals this term, finding the back of the net 12 times while providing eight assists. But Asensio’s long-term future is uncertain as he is in the final weeks of his Real Madrid contract.

The Merengues are keen on tying the Spanish international to a new contract, with reports from last month claiming a renewal was on the cards. But the situation has changed drastically in the past few weeks. With suitors like Aston Villa, Arsenal, and PSG pushing for Asensio’s signature, his head has turned. And the player will likely leave Real Madrid as a free agent this summer.

Unai Emery is reportedly pushing Aston Villa to sign the Real Madrid attacker. And it is hardly surprising that the Villans want to secure Asensio’s services, considering he will be a huge upgrade on Leon Bailey. And the report by MARCA claims that the 27-year-old is closing in on joining Aston Villa, whose project he admires.

The latest update comes as a blow for suitors like Arsenal. The Gunners are in the market for an alternative to Bukayo Saka, who practically played every game when fit this season. Meanwhile, the player has also been a target for PSG, who wanted to land him amid uncertainties surrounding Lionel Messi and Neymar’s futures.
