Manchester United have reportedly held talks to sign Jeremie Frimpong from Bundesliga club Bayer Leverkusen.

Jeremie Frimpong has been in phenomenal form this season, and he has nine goals and ten assists to his name across all competitions. According to a report from GiveMeSport, the Red Devils have held positive talks with the player’s entourage regarding a summer transfer.

Fabrizio Romano has revealed that the Dutch defender is on the radar of the Red Devils, who are looking to bring in more options at the back. Frimpong has been linked with Barcelona as well.

Romano said, “They had a meeting with the agent of the player, it was one month ago. It was a positive meeting. Frimpong is giving priority to Premier League football in general. He would love to return to Manchester, he was in the Manchester City academy. He appreciates the city and the lifestyle there.”

Manchester United currently have Diogo Dalot and Aaron Wan-Bissaka as the right-back options. However, Wan-Bissaka could be on his way out of the club at the end of the season. The experienced full-back lost his starting spot to Dalot earlier this season and might seek an exit.

A move away from Manchester United could be ideal for the defender this summer. He needs to play regularly at this stage of his career, and the Red Devils will not be able to provide him with that opportunity. Furthermore, if they sign Frimpong from Bayer Leverkusen, Wan-Bissaka will drop further down the pecking order.

The 22-year-old Dutchman could be a quality alternative to the former Crystal Palace defender. While Frimpong is not as reliable a defender compared to Wan Bissaka, he is certainly better than the Manchester United player going forward. And at £50 million, he might be bang for the buck.

Wan-Bissaka has been criticised heavily for his contributions going forward, and Frimpong could prove to be an upgrade in that regard. The Dutchman can operate as a right-back as well as a right-sided wing=back. He could be an ideal fit for Erik ten Hag’s attacking approach.

The 22-year-old is still quite young. And a manager like Erik ten Hag could help him improve further and develop into a top-class defender at Manchester United. The Dutchman has already proven himself in the Bundesliga and the opportunity to play in the Premier League will be an attractive option for him.

Manchester United are one of the biggest clubs in the world and they could provide him with the platform to showcase his qualities to the rest of the world. It remains to be seen whether the Red Devils can agree on a fee with Leverkusen in the coming weeks now. For now, the talks between the two parties have been positive.
