Barcelona will prefer not to fork out any money to re-sign Pierre-Emerick Aubameyang from Chelsea in the summer transfer window.

According to a report by Football Insider, Barcelona will prefer to sign Pierre-Emerick Aubameyang on a free transfer in the summer transfer window. And that might be possible, with Chelsea considering terminating the beleaguered attacker’s contract.

Pierre-Emerick Aubameyang returned to the Premier League last summer by joining Chelsea from Barcelona. The Gabonese striker’s previous stint in England had ended in anguish after Mikel Arteta banished him from the Arsenal first team. And his spell with Barcelona promised much but ended in a whimper.

Even though the 33-year-old ended the 2022/23 season as Barcelona’s joint-top scorer, he became a bit-part player overnight following Robert Lewandowski’s replacement. And he has endured a difficult campaign with Chelsea, managing only three goals and one assist in 18 outings. But that has not deterred Barcelona from trying to secure Aubameyang’s services.

Barcelona attempted to re-sign Aubameyang in the January transfer window. But FIFA rules prohibited the Blaugrana from bringing him back to Spotify Camp Nou. However, Barcelona’s interest in the Chelsea attacker has not ended. And they are ready to make a move for the veteran attacker.

Meanwhile, the player is ready to facilitate a move to Barcelona by taking a pay cut. Meanwhile, Barcelona’s continued interest in the beleaguered Chelsea attacker is understandable, as Xavi Hernandez does not have a backup for Robert Lewandowski. And the Gabonese striker is already accustomed to Xavi’s demands at Camp Nou.

But Barcelona will only launch the offensive for the former Arsenal captain if he becomes a free agent. And that might be possible, with recent reports pointing to Chelsea considering terminating his deal. If that happens, Barcelona will likely be in the pole position to secure Aubameyang’s services in the summer transfer window.

It will be interesting to see if Chelsea will actually release the 33-year-old from his contract at the end of the season. With the veteran striker barely featuring under Graham Potter, leaving as a free agent might be possible. And a free transfer to Barcelona is on the cards.
