Barcelona might not launch the offensive this summer for soon-to-be-free agent Marcus Thuram, a target for Chelsea.

According to a report by Spanish outlet Mundo Deportivo, Barcelona might not be able to afford to sign Marcus Thuram in the summer transfer window. The Catalan giants’ financial situation is compelling them to move away from the Frenchman. And the development comes as a boost for other suitors like Chelsea.

Marcus Thuram has come leaps and bounds since joining Borussia Monchengladbach from Guingamp nearly four years ago. The 25-year-old has been a regular for the German outfit since arriving from France. And 2022/23 has been his best season thus far in his stint with Gladbach.

The French international has amassed 14 goals and four assists in 25 appearances thus far this term. But Gladbach will lose Thuram in the summer transfer window as a free agent when his contract expires. Such a situation has captured the attention of several European bigwigs, including Barcelona and Chelsea.

Barcelona will need several reinforcements in the summer transfer window to get up to the desired levels. But Javier Tebas recently insisted that he will not allow the Blaugrana to sign new players unless they balance the books. So Barcelona will have to look for clever moves and target potential free agents.

Marcus Thuram has thus emerged as a viable target for Barcelona. And the 14-goal Frenchman is also an attractive proposition due to his versatility in the final third. But Barcelona’s financial situation will force them to cool interest in the 25-year-old. That hands a boost to other suitors like Chelsea.

The Blues also targetted Thuram in the January transfer window, only for a move to not materialise. Chelsea’s interest in the 2022 FIFA World Cup finalist has not ended. And considering they are keen on signing a striker this summer, the player is a potential low-cost solution amid a potential FFP threat.

Apart from Chelsea and Barcelona, Bayern Munich and Inter Milan have also shown interest in the Gladbach attacker. But Barcelona will unlikely compete with other suitors who can offer him better terms. And it will be interesting to see where Thuram lands in the summer transfer window.
