So Chelsea will have to look elsewhere following the decision by the Barcelona midfielder.
Franck Kessie was one of the most underrated midfielders in the world when he joined Barcelona. The Blaugrana signed the Ivory Coast international in a Bosman move after he ran down his contract with AC Milan. But his stock has fallen considerably following the move to Barcelona, as he has been a bit-part player.
The 26-year-old has managed only 754 minutes of game time for Barcelona across 18 appearances. And Kessie’s market value has fallen to €35 million due to his role at Spotify Camp Nou. But that has not detracted the suitors, with Chelsea among the clubs keen on signing the player this month.
The Blues have been on a spending spree since their takeover last year. And Chelsea co-owner Todd Boehly has sanctioned several big-money deals. As far as the January transfer window is concerned, nearly half a dozen players have joined Chelsea. And Boehly wants to bolster the midfield unit before the month ends.

Recent reports suggested they might offer Hakim Ziyech to sweeten the deal for Barcelona. The free-spending Chelsea might not have qualms about matching his market value of €35 million. But a January departure is improbable, with Kessie set to take a call on his future in the summer.
