Atletico Madrid will reportedly begin negotiations with Barcelona for 28-year-old Dutch attacker Memphis Depay next week.

According to reputed Italian journalist Fabrizio Romano, Memphis Depay is the subject of interest from Atletico Madrid. The Colchoneros want the 28-year-old attacker as a replacement for Joao Felix. And they have submitted an enquiry to Barcelona for the out-of-favour forward.

Memphis Depay has seen his fortunes dwindle considerably in the last twelve months. At this time last year, the Dutchman was a leading figure for Barcelona before ending the 2021/22 season as the club’s joint-top scorer. But the arrival of Robert Lewandowski and Raphinha has sent him tumbling in the pecking order.

The 28-year-old has managed just four outings thus far this season, scoring once in 206 minutes of game time. And Depay will likely leave Barcelona this year, either in January or when his deal expires in the summer. And Atletico Madrid will look to sign the player from Barcelona in the ongoing transfer window.

Atletico Madrid will see Joao Felix join Chelsea in the coming days. The two clubs have verbally agreed to a loan deal, with the Portuguese international keen on leaving. And Los Rojiblancos will need to scour the market for a replacement, considering they also sold Matheus Cunha a few days ago.

Depay has thus emerged as a viable target for Atletico Madrid. The Colchoneros have already contacted Barcelona to enquire about the 28-year-old’s availability. And the two clubs will begin negotiations over a possible deal for the Dutch attacker in the January transfer window.

Fabrizio Romano has claimed that the Spanish giants are confident about signing the Dutchman this month. Discussions over a January deal will soon take place between Atletico Madrid and Barcelona. And while the Colchoneros also have other targets, the Barcelona outcast is seemingly the priority.

The 28-year-old attacker also has other bigwigs tailing him, with Manchester United particularly keen on re-signing him. But with the Red Devils focusing on Wout Weghorst, a move across La Liga to Atletico Madrid seems possible. It will be interesting to see if Depay’s stint with Barcelona ends this month.
