Newcastle United have joined the chase for Leeds United’s 22-year-old French goalkeeper Illan Meslier, with Chelsea also interested in him.

According to RMC Sport, Newcastle United have become the latest club to enter the chase for Illan Meslier. The 22-year-old French goalkeeper has performed admirably for Leeds United and is attracting the interest of multiple Premier League outfits, including Chelsea.

The January transfer window only opened a few days ago. But some big deals are already in the pipeline. Leeds United are bracing themselves for offers from top teams for their goalkeeper Illan Meslier. The Yorkshire outfit have a task to protect their interest in their prized asset as they look to keep him beyond this month.

The 22-year-old French goalkeeper has a contract until 2026, which puts Leeds in a commanding position about his future. They are aware of the growing interest in Meslier but also know the challenges of replacing him in this tough window, especially for goalkeepers.

Leeds could look to conduct deal in the summer if Meslier wishes to depart the club for a more significant challenge. But they will still want to keep him on board during the January market. Newcastle United have become the latest side to show an interest in the 22-year-old French goalkeeper.

Meslier recently produced a man-of-the-match performance against Newcastle United away from home and kept a clean sheet. That display may have ignited interest from the Magpies, who only signed Nick Pope during the summer. The former Burnley shot-stopper has steadied the backline, with Eddie Howe’s side having the meanest defensive record in the division.

Howe would like to add competition in the goalkeeping position, and Meslier, though an expensive option, will make Newcastle one of the strongest teams in that aspect. But the Magpies face plenty of competition from rivals for Meslier if they are serious about the pursuit.

Chelsea are one of the clubs keen on the Leeds Unites goalkeeper, as Graham Potter seeks to solve the problematic position. Incumbents Kepa Arrizabalaga and Edouard Mendy’s futures remain in considerable doubt beyond this window.

Meslier is a young option who can fill the role for years. The 22-year-old French goalkeeper will likely decide on his future in the short term, as he will dream of becoming France’s No.1 star in the coming years. He will need to play at the highest level and in a side that competes in the Champions League. So Chelsea and Newcastle United might fancy their chances of signing him.
