Fabrizio Romano has ruled out a possible January move to Tottenham for Memphis Depay, whose Barcelona future remains uncertain.
Eminent Italian journalist Fabrizio Romano has told Give Me Sport that Memphis Depay will unlikely join Tottenham in the January transfer window. He added that everything around the Barcelona attacker is calm, with the rumours not being concrete.
Romano said, “At the moment, from what I’m told, there are many rumours but nothing concrete, not with Tottenham or with any other club. Everything is so calm around Memphis Depay.”
Memphis Depay has reached a crossroads in his career despite a decent debut campaign with Barcelona. The Dutch attacker had ended the 2022/23 season as the joint-top scorer for the Blaugrana. But he has been tumbling down the pecking order in 2022, with Barcelona signing four attacking players.
Depay is currently an emergency option for Xavi Hernandez, which has reflected in his game time this season. The 28-year-old has managed only 131 minutes of action across three appearances. And after a decent World Cup campaign with the Netherlands, a new adventure might await him in January. The player’s situation has already captured the attention of several clubs, including Tottenham.
Tottenham will likely enter the market for an offensive reinforcement in the January transfer window. While they signed Richarlison in the summer, the north Londoners need more quality in the final third. With Son Heung-min struggling to perform consistently, Antonio Conte can do with another option at his disposal.
The versatile Depay is thus an option worth considering for Tottenham. And recent reports suggested that intermediaries had offered Tottenham the chance to sign the Barcelona attacker. But with Fabrizio Romano effectively ruling out a move, it will be interesting to see who Spurs turn to next.
As for Depay, Romano’s comments suggest he might not leave Barcelona at all. The reputed Italian journalist recently also ruled out a move to Newcastle United for the Barcelona attacker. But with the Blaugrana being desperate to balance the books, selling Depay will be crucial. It will be interesting to see if the Catalan giants offload the Dutchman in January.
