Barcelona will reportedly have to fork out €15 million to secure the services of emerging Argentine midfielder Alan Varela.

According to a report by Spanish publication SPORT, Boca Juniors will only part ways with Alan Varela if his suitors trigger his release clause. So Barcelona and others will need to stump up €15 million to secure the services of the emerging Argentine midfielder.

Alan Varela has been with Boca Juniors for a decade and has gone from strength to strength during this period. The 21-year-old joined the Argentine giants from Barcelona Lujan in 2012. And he has not looked back since breaking into the first-team squad as a teenage prodigy two years ago.

Boca Juniors enjoyed a brilliant 2022 campaign, completing the league and cup double. And Varela played a pivotal role in their success, chipping in with one goal and two assists. The emerging Argentine midfielder’s exploits have not gone unnoticed either, with Barcelona keeping tabs on him.

Barcelona will lay down a succession plan for Sergio Busquets in the coming months, with the veteran midfielder facing an uncertain future at Spotify Camp Nou. Recent reports have claimed that the 34-year-old is considering leaving Barcelona in the summer. And with the player in the twilight of his career, the Blaugrana will need to plan for life after him.

Several midfielders have thus popped up on Barcelona’s radar, with Varela emerging as a cost-effective solution. With Barcelona’s financial woes still troubling them, they need economic fixes in the market. And the emerging Argentine midfielder is one such option for the Blaugrana. And the Catalan giants now know how much they will need to pay to sign Varela.

Boca Juniors will ask suitors to trigger the 21-year-old’s release clause to do business with them. So Barcelona will need to fork out €15 million to secure the services of the emerging midfielder in the summer. That should fit within their miserly budget at the end of the season.

But Barcelona will face stiff competition from Ajax and Benfica for Varela. And the two clubs should not have any qualms about paying €15 million to sign the Argentine midfielder. It will be interesting to see if Barcelona will succeed in bringing in the youngster as a successor to Busquets.
