Sergio Busquets considering summer Barcelona exit

Sergio Busquets reportedly wants to leave Barcelona this upcoming summer despite being offered a contract extension.

As per Mundo Deportivo, Barcelona midfielder Sergio Busquets might not extend his association with the club beyond the ongoing season and might leave the club in the summer.

Despite severe rumours, the 34-year-old has been ever-present this campaign and has led his side to the top of La Liga. The Spanish international has also been selected for the squad for the 2022 FIFA World Cup and will likely try for one last time on the biggest stage of football.

Barcelona went through a rapid overhaul in the summer as the new reign under Joan Laporta brought a sense of positivity among the stakeholders. The Catalan giants activated a number of economic levers and took a few precautionary measures to solidify their position.

Work still needs to be done, but the bedrock has been presented with utmost success and the Blaugrana are tipped to do well in the near future. A number of key contract renewals are on the cards and Busquets’s future also needs to be addressed.

The Catalan giants have failed to find his ideal successor. And a timely reminder of Busquets’s current contractual scenario has forced Barcelona to initiate contract talks with the entourage of the player as the entire world ventures into the World Cup break. Meanwhile, they are also showing interest in several midfielders, including Maxime Lopez.

The 34-year-old is keen on a fresh challenge, and he will not have a dearth of suitors if he plans to leave Barcelona on a free transfer. Only a few could match up his display on the pitch, and veteran the midfielder is aware of the craze he might create if he makes himself available on the market.

Frenkie de Jong has been tried in the deeper role by Xavi Hernandez on a few occasions. But the Dutch midfielder is more suitable for an advanced role, and thus the need to get Busquets for a prolonged time has been felt.

But Barcelona’s recent financial crisis might be one of the reasons why the player might have chosen to end his association as there will not be a guarantee of his salary being paid in full as we have seen in the recent past.
