La Liga heavyweights Barcelona reportedly view emerging Argentine midfielder Alan Varela as a long-term successor to Sergio Busquets.

According to a report by Spanish publication SPORT, Alan Varela is the subject of interest from Barcelona. The Catalan giants are considering the emerging Argentine midfielder as a long-term successor to Sergio Busquets, who might depart from Spotify Camp Nou next year.

Alan Varela started his youth career at Barcelona Lujan before joining Boca Juniors in 2012. The 21-year-old progressed through the ranks steadily before breaking into the first-team squad two years ago. And the emerging midfielder has established himself as a pivotal figure for Boca Juniors.

The Argentine midfielder enjoyed a splendid 2022 campaign as Boca Juniors won Liga Profesional. The youngster turned out 42 times across all competitions, chipping in with one goal and two assists. And Varela’s performances have not gone unnoticed, with Barcelona being among his prospective suitors.

Barcelona will delve into the market for a midfield reinforcement next year. In particular, the Catalan giants need to lay down a succession plan for Sergio Busquets, with the veteran midfielder in the twilight of his career. And several midfielders have emerged on Barcelona’s radar to replace Busquets.

Sofyan Amrabat was the most recent holding midfielder to emerge on Barcelona’s radar. And Alan Varela is also a viable target for the Blaugrana heading into next year. The 21-year-old has his best years ahead of him and will be able to offer a decade of service to Barcelona. And the emerging Argentine midfielder will not cost a bomb either.

The report claims that Boca Juniors will demand around €20 million to part ways with Varela. That figure might be somewhat pricey for a club struggling on the financial front. But €20 million is an amount worth spending, considering the 21-year-old might be a long-term successor to Busquets.

It will be interesting to see if Varela becomes a top target for Barcelona next year. For now, the Catalan giants are trying to sort out Busquets’s future. And with the Barcelona captain pondering over a summer departure, the emerging Argentine midfielder might arrive at Spotify Camp Nou as his long-term successor.
