Memphis Depay is reportedly inching closer to joining La Liga heavyweights Sevilla from Barcelona in the January transfer window.

According to a report by Spanish outlet Fichajes, Memphis Depay will likely leave Barcelona in the January transfer window. And the Dutch attacker’s next destination seems to be in La Liga, with Sevilla closing in on securing his services.

Memphis Depay was on cloud nine when he made the biggest move of his career in July 2021. The 28-year-old joined Barcelona in a Bosman move last year after running down his contract with Lyon. And he enjoyed a solid debut season with the Blaugrana, finishing as the top scorer for the club.

But Depay has fallen down the pecking order at Camp Nou this season following the arrivals of Raphinha and Robert Lewandowski. Now a peripheral figure, the Dutch attacker has managed only three appearances this season for Barcelona. And the player will likely leave Barcelona in January, with Sevilla being a potential destination.

The Andalusian giants endured a horrific first half of the 2022/23 season, which saw Julen Lopetegui depart from the Ramon Sanchez Pizjuan Stadium. And new manager Jorge Sampaoli wants to make sweeping changes to the squad next year. The January transfer window will specifically witness the Sevilla boss add to the offensive unit.

Depay has thus emerged as a viable target for Los Nervionenses. And according to Fichajes, the 28-year-old is closing in on joining Sevilla in the summer transfer window. In addition, if the Barcelona outcast has his way, he will move across La Liga on a free transfer this coming winter.

The former Manchester United attacker reportedly wants to leave Barcelona in January as a free agent. And Depay will become an even more attractive target if the Catalan giants grant him his wish of leaving for no cost. The Dutchman will also be able to recoup a signing-on fee with such a move.

But Sevilla will need to move quickly to secure the services of the 28-year-old, with several other clubs keen on signing him. Premier League bigwigs Manchester United and Tottenham have shown interest in the Barcelona outcast. And with his stint at Camp Nou winding down, it will be interesting to see where he ends up next.
