Struggling La Liga giants Sevilla are reportedly interested in signing Memphis Depay from Barcelona in the January transfer window.

According to a report by Spanish outlet Fichajes, Memphis Depay is the subject of interest from Sevilla over a possible move in the January transfer window. The Dutch attacker hopes to leave Barcelona as a free agent this coming winter.

Memphis Depay is currently in his second season with Barcelona. During this period, the 28-year-old has seen his share of highs and lows at Spotify Camp Nou. While he ended 2021/22 as the top scorer for Barcelona, he has fallen to the bottom of the pecking order in the ongoing campaign.

The Dutch attacker has featured just thrice for Barcelona this season, scoring once in 131 minutes of game time. And Depay, who has been on the sidelines since September due to a hamstring injury, wants to leave Barcelona as a free agent in the January transfer window. Such a situation has captured the attention of Sevilla.

The Andalusian giants have endured a forgettable 2022/23 season thus far, with the club already relieving Julen Lopetegui of his duties as the first-team boss. Jorge Sampaoli has replaced Lopetegui at the helm at Sevilla, but their struggles have continued.

Los Nervionenses are currently in the relegation zone in La Liga, occupying the 18th spot after winning just two of their 14 games thus far. Sevilla’s UEFA Champions League campaign was also a dud as they finished third in Group G to fall to the Europa League. Sampaoli thus wants Sevilla to enter the market for appropriate reinforcements in the January transfer window.

The Argentine tactician is keen on bringing in an offensive reinforcement amid the struggles of his attacking contingent. Depay has thus emerged as a viable target for Sevilla amid his woes at FC Barcelona. But the struggling La Liga giants will face stiff competition from several European bigwigs for Depay’s signature.

Juventus and Manchester United have also shown interest in the Barcelona attacker. The 28-year-old will hope to see Barcelona terminating his contract in the coming weeks to recoup some transfer bonus. And it will be interesting to see if he remains in La Liga by joining Sevilla. With Juventus and Manchester United also in the Europa League, none of his suitors might be able to offer Champions League football.
