Barcelona will reportedly need to fend off Serie A giants AC Milan in the race to sign Diogo Dalot from Manchester United next year.

According to a report by The Sun, Diogo Dalot has emerged on the radar of AC Milan over a possible move next year. The Manchester United defender is also a target for Barcelona. But the Red Devils want to secure his long-term future and will first trigger his one-year contract option.

Diogo Dalot joined Manchester United from FC Porto over four years ago, with his stock being considerably high for a teenager. But the 23-year-old took some time to establish a foothold in the first-team squad at Old Trafford. And he has done well to make the right-back berth his own since returning from a loan stint with AC Milan.

The Portuguese international is now the first-choice right-back for Manchester United and is enjoying a solid 2022/23 campaign. Dalot has one goal and two assists in 18 appearances across all competitions. But the young defender is in the final year of his Manchester United contract, which has alerted Barcelona and AC Milan.

Barcelona will need to sign a right-back next summer as Sergi Roberto has regressed considerably in the last few years. In addition, Hector Bellerin only signed a one-year contract when he arrived from Arsenal and might not be at Camp Nou next season. So Barcelona will have to invest in at least one right-back.

Dalot has thus emerged as a viable target for Barcelona. But recent reports have claimed that the Manchester United defender is an impossible option for the Blaugrana. Meanwhile, Barcelona will face stiff competition from AC Milan in the race to sign the Portuguese international.

The Serie A champions had Dalot on their books in the 2019/20 season. And amid uncertainties surrounding Barcelona loanee Sergino Dest, AC Milan might have to enter the market for a right-back. But signing Dalot might not be possible, with Manchester United looking to extend his deal.

The Red Devils will first extend Dalot’s contract by a year to protect his value. In addition, the 23-year-old has no interest in joining Barcelona or any other club as he wants to succeed at Manchester United. It will be interesting to see if AC Milan or Barcelona can convince Dalot to leave the Premier League club.
