Chelsea rival Manchester City in Giorgio Scalvini pursuit

Chelsea will reportedly compete with Manchester City for promising Italian centre-back Giorgio Scalvini, valued at around €20 million by Atalanta.

According to a report by Italian publication La Repubblica, Giorgio Scalvini has emerged on the radar of Premier League bigwigs Chelsea. The Italian centre-back is also the subject of interest from Manchester City, with Atalanta demanding around €20 million to part ways with him.

Giorgio Scalvini is one of the most promising young centre-backs in Italy, with the 18-year-old coming a long way at Atalanta. The teenage wonderkid spent the initial years of his youth career at AC Palazzolo and Brescia. But the move to Atalanta has done wonders to his progress.

The Italian defender graduated to Atalanta’s first-team squad last season and made over a dozen appearances for La Dea. And his stock has risen further this season, as he has turned out six times in Serie A. Scalvini’s progress has not gone unnoticed either, with Chelsea and Manchester City keen on signing him.

The interest from Manchester City is surprising, considering they signed Manuel Akanji in the summer transfer window. And the Swiss international’s departure has left Pep Guardiola with five centre-backs. In addition, recent reports have claimed that Manchester City will not entertain offers for Nathan Ake.

Nonetheless, it looks like Scalvini is on Manchester City’s radar, with the Citizens eyeing him as a long-term investment. But the Premier League champions face stiff competition from Chelsea for the Italian centre-back.

Chelsea, like Manchester City, signed centre-backs in the summer, bringing in Kalidou Koulibaly and Wesley Fofana. But Koulibaly is on the wrong side of 30, with Thiago Silva in the twilight of his career. In addition, Silva is coy on his Chelsea future, recently revealing that he will take a call by discussing the matter with his family. Scalvini is thus a viable target for the west London club.

The 18-year-old will not be a costly acquisition for suitors, with Atalanta demanding around €20 million for him. Meanwhile, in addition to Chelsea and Manchester City, AS Roma, Inter Milan, and Juventus also want Scalvini. So it will be interesting to see how the race to sign the Italian centre-back progresses.
