Tottenham manager Roberto De Zerbi has opened up on their transfer plans for the summer after surviving relegation.
Tottenham survived the drop with a 1-0 win over Everton on the final matchday of the season. With these three points, they managed to finish 17th on the table for the second season running. Post the game, their manager, Roberto De Zerbi, was asked about his hopes for the future and the club’s transfer plans.
While speaking to Sky Sports, the Italian tactician said, “Next season we have to build a top, top, top, top team.
“We have to bring, I don’t know how many, but other top first-level [players] because it is right to give satisfaction for the fans and the club because the board suffered this season.
“We deserve something more because we suffered too much.”
While the 2024/25 season wasn’t that great, Ange Postecoglou did help them bring an end to their title drought by winning the Europa League. However, it wasn’t enough to help him keep his job, as they finished 17th in the league.
The club ended up appointing Thomas Frank in the summer, and they did invest in a few top players. Despite that, the results didn’t go their way, and Frank ended up getting sacked. Following his sacking back in February, they brought in Igor Tudor, but he only managed to survive for 43 days before he was asked to pack his bags.
De Zerbi saves Tottenham; time for a rebuild
During the Croatian manager’s stint, they got dragged into the relegation battle. The North London club ended up appointing De Zerbi as their new boss at the end of March. They handed him a long-term deal with the hope that he could help them survive the drop and then get them back to the top.
The Italian has successfully cleared the first major hurdle, with the team winning three and drawing two out of the seven league games that he has managed. Now the focus is on reinforcing the squad in the summer to ensure they do not suffer a similar fate next season.
The manager feels the fans and the board have suffered enough, and they will need to make a few top signings to ensure similar mistakes are not repeated. He wants to build a top team in the summer to turn things around.
The North London club are expected to look for more attacking firepower, as well as some experience in the centre of the park. The bigger challenge for them will be to ensure their best players continue at the club after a disastrous campaign.
