Bryan King has urged Morgan Gibbs-White to make the move to Tottenham this summer to help revive his international career.
Morgan Gibbs-White came close to leaving Nottingham Forest last summer, when Tottenham thought they had triggered a release clause in his contract. As it happened, the Midlands club threatened legal action against the North London outfit, which saw Spurs back away from the 26-year-old Premier League playmaker.
Forest made the right call to keep him and even handed him a short extension to his deal, with the agreement now set to expire in 2028. Gibbs-White scored 18 goals across all competitions and provided seven assists, as Forest avoided relegation and reached the semi-finals of the Europa League.
However, heading into the summer, there have been a few rumblings of a possible departure from Forest. Tottenham were reportedly linked as one of his suitors, and there is a case to be made that the North London club may have established good contact with his camp from last summer.
Whether Spurs need him now remains the question, but Roberto De Zerbi will want a player of his calibre, especially with Xavi Simons set to miss several months with a long-term injury. Moreover, James Maddison has only recently returned from an ACL injury at the end of last season, so there will also be concerns over his fitness.
Morgan Gibbs-White urged to join Spurs
A former senior scout at Tottenham, Bryan King, via Football Insider, has urged Gibbs-White to further his career and make the move to Spurs this summer. He said the 26-year-old Premier League playmaker needed such a move to reinvigorate his international career after Thomas Tuchel ignored him for his World Cup squad despite the impressive season he had.
King said: “Well, you had all this fuss last year, didn’t you, with him? He was going, he was staying, he was going, then the new contract came up.”
“There’s no point in having an unhappy footballer within your football club. But he’s got to start thinking: ‘How will I get back into the England reckoning? Have I got more chance playing for a London club than I have for being up here?’
“Spurs are a bigger club than Nottingham Forest at this moment in time. So, you know, they’re all things to be taken into consideration.”
King may have a good point for Gibbs-White to make the big switch to Spurs. Forest have been unwilling to sell, according to reports, although as the summer window progresses, the 26-year-old Premier League playmaker may attract more options.
Arsenal were one of the clubs previously linked, with Gibbs-White reportedly seen as an alternative to Morgan Rogers at the time. With Rogers now having completed a move to Chelsea, Arsenal could consider Gibbs-White, who, according to Fabrizio Romano, has signed with ROOF as his new agency.
Overall, there is a chance he could leave, but Forest will feel the need to demand a significant fee, especially after several high-profile and expensive transfers in the English market. Whether Spurs are set to enter the race in a major way remains to be seen, but as of now things are calm on that front.
