Emerson Royal responds to Aston Villa links as offer made

Flamengo full-back Emerson Royal has insisted that he remains committed to Flamengo amid his links with Aston Villa.

As quoted by Brazilian outlet Itatiaia, Emerson Royal is the subject of interest from Aston Villa. The Villans are eager to bolster their defensive unit by actively pursuing a right-back in the ongoing transfer window, and they have failed with their opening bid to sign the 27-year-old Flamengo defender.

Emerson said, “As I said, until nothing is decided, my head is always at Flamengo. I am very happy to receive this offer, as it shows that my work is being done well. My head is at Flamengo, but I don’t know about the future.”

The Emerson Royal renaissance

Emerson Royal’s move to Flamengo has revived his career after mixed spells in Europe. After a largely impressive spell with Real Betis, the 27-year-old struggled to make his mark during his stints with Tottenham Hotspur and AC Milan. However, returning to his homeland allowed him to regain consistency.

The Brazilian right-back has been impressive in the 2026 season, providing four assists in 21 appearances across all competitions while accumulating over 1,500 minutes of game time. Emerson’s exploits for Flamengo have piqued the attention of several well-known clubs, with Aston Villa among the prospective suitors vying for his signature.

Premier League return on the cards?

Aston Villa’s interest in Emerson Royal makes sense. The Villans actively need to fill a requirement at right-back, as Andres Garcia has been heavily linked with a move away from the West Midlands club. The Spaniard is keen on seeking greener pastures after becoming a peripheral figure under Unai Emery.

Garcia’s departure will leave Emery with only Matty Cash as a recognised right-back in his squad, with Ezri Konsa being a makeshift option for the position. So, Aston Villa must pursue a recognised right-back, with several candidates emerging as targets.

However, it seems Emerson has become a top target for Aston Villa after they recently submitted an unsuccessful offer to sign him. With talks between all parties still ongoing, Villa must work on turning the Brazilian defender’s head. However, the 27-year-old will be a risky acquisition after his struggles with Tottenham, though he will feel he has unfinished business in the Premier League.
