Chelsea urged to sign Denzel Dumfries

Stan Collymore has urged Chelsea to launch the offensive for Inter Milan defender Denzel Dumfries, a target for bitter rival Tottenham.

In a conversation with Caught Offside, Stan Collymore told Chelsea to pursue Denzel Dumfries. The Dutch defender is also a target for Tottenham Hotspur. But the former Liverpool striker suggested that the player’s qualities will suit Chelsea better.

Denzel Dumfries spent his formative years in the Netherlands, passing through the academies of Spartaan ’20, VV Smitshoek, and BVV Barendrecht. But the 26-year-old saw his stock skyrocketing after he joined PSV Eindhoven in the biggest move of his professional career. And after three years with the Dutch giants, he moved to Italy, with Inter Milan snapping him up last year.

Dumfries has gone from strength to strength in the last 18 months, establishing himself as one of the best full-backs in Serie A. The Dutchman has two goals and three assists in 20 appearances for Inter this season. And he has also taken the 2022 FIFA World Cup by storm, scoring once and assisting twice as the Netherlands reached the quarter-finals. Meanwhile, Dumfries’s exploits have alerted Chelsea and Tottenham.

Now, Stan Collymore has had his say on Dumfries and his future at the club level. With the 26-year-old likely to leave Inter Milan sooner or later, the Premier League seems like his next destination. And Collymore opined that Chelsea should sign the Dutch defender as his qualities suit the Blues.

Collymore, replying to the question of the club that will suit Dumfries best, said, “Chelsea.” The former Liverpool striker then added, “He’s a good technician, would fit in well with Chelsea’s youngsters, philosophy and potentially could add much-needed goals and assists.”

Recent reports have claimed that Chelsea made an approach for the Dutchman. Meanwhile, Tottenham also submitted an enquiry for the 26-year-old. Both clubs are in the market for a right-back, but the player will likely receive more game time at the Tottenham Hotspur Stadium.

However, Chelsea will likely have a better trophy-winning pedigree. So it will be interesting to see which club the 26-year-old decides to join when he eventually leaves Inter Milan in the coming months.
