Manchester United have received a boost in their pursuit of former Newcastle United boss Eddie Howe.
Eddie Howe has emerged as a potential contingency option for Manchester United should Michael Carrick fail to turn around the club’s early-season struggles, according to a report by Football Insider.
The 48-year-old is taking a break from football after leaving Newcastle United in the summer and is understood to be interested in the prospect of managing one of England’s biggest clubs.
Manchester United are not planning to dismiss Carrick immediately. The hierarchy are keen to give their permanent manager time to improve results. However, they are assessing contingency plans in case performances continue to disappoint, with Howe among the names worth monitoring.
Carrick took charge midway through last season and made an impressive impact, guiding Manchester United to third place in the Premier League and securing their return to the Champions League. Those achievements convinced the club to hand him a two-year contract as permanent manager.
However, the Red Devils have struggled to maintain that momentum this season. Despite strengthening their midfield during the summer, they have recorded just two wins in eight matches across all competitions.
Their league form has been particularly concerning, with only one victory in their opening six Premier League games. An early exit from the EFL Cup and a failure to beat a ten-man Tottenham Hotspur side in their most recent outing have added to the pressure.
Why Howe could be an ideal fit for Manchester United
Howe could offer Manchester United an experienced alternative if the hierarchy eventually decides to make a change. The Englishman has extensive Premier League experience and demonstrated his ability to rebuild a struggling club during his time at Newcastle.
When he arrived at St. James’ Park, the Magpies were battling near the relegation zone. He gradually transformed the team into a regular contender for European qualification, leading them into the Champions League on two occasions and winning the EFL Cup in 2025.
That record established him as one of the Premier League’s respected managers and would position him as an attractive candidate for Manchester United. Nevertheless, Howe is not pursuing an immediate return to management.
A major opportunity could tempt him, and Manchester United would certainly represent a significant challenge. For now, Carrick retains the club’s backing, meaning a managerial change is not imminent. However, with Howe reportedly interested in the prospect and United already considering contingency plans, his availability could become important if results fail to improve.
