Manchester United are looking at former England boss Gareth Southgate as an ideal alternative to Michael Carrick.
Michael Carrick has completely transformed the mood at Old Trafford since taking charge at the start of the year. The team has been on a roll under him. They have made a rapid climb from mid-table to 3rd place, and look certain to secure Champions League football for next season.
On the back of his exceptional work, the former United midfielder is now the front-runner to become their next permanent manager ahead of next season. However, he is not the only name on Sir Jim Ratcliffe’s wishlist. According to a report from TEAMtalk, the Red Devils consider Gareth Southgate an ideal alternative.
Ratcliffe wants Southgate at Old Trafford
Ratcliffe remains a massive admirer of Southgate and would love to have him on their bench. He is considered an ideal fit for their project, and they have internally discussed him as a potential candidate for the managerial role.
While he might not have won anything with England, Southgate transformed them, and under him, they played some quality football at major events. The Manchester-based club believe the 55-year-old could help them back to the top of English football.
Carrick remains the first choice
Carrick remains the front-runner to take the job on the back of his sensational work, but United won’t make any decisions until the end of the season. Their chiefs continue to look at other alternatives, as they want to make sure this appointment does the trick.
Director of football Jason Wilcox, chief executive officer Omar Berrada, and director of recruitment Christopher Vivell are all heavily involved in the process of appointing a new manager. Southgate is a very tempting option, but for now Carrick remains the frontrunner.
Since the United legend returned to the club, they have played 12 league games and won eight of them, with just two defeats. No team has collected as many points as the Red Devils have since Carrick took charge.
