Manchester City will compete with Real Madrid and Liverpool for 42-year-old Bayer Leverkusen manager Xabi Alonso.

According to a report by Spanish outlet AS, Xabi Alonso is the subject of interest from Manchester City. The Premier League champions have started planning for life after Pep Guardiola amid concerns that he might leave in 2025. Meanwhile, the 42-year-old Bayer Leverkusen manager is also a target for Real Madrid and Liverpool.

Xabi Alonso has seen his stock in the managerial world skyrocket in no time. The Spaniard had an illustrious career at the club level, enjoying tremendous success with Liverpool, Real Madrid, and Bayern Munich. He entered the managerial world in 2019 by taking charge of Real Sociedad’s reserve side.

The 42-year-old was with Real Sociedad B for three years before Bayer Leverkusen came calling in the first half of the 2022/23 season. The decision raised a few eyebrows, considering Alonso was a novice in the managerial world. However, he has barely taken any time to vindicate that choice, guiding Bayer Leverkusen to the Bundesliga title this term.

The German giants are unbeaten across competitions this season and have steamrolled to the Bundesliga title. They have the chance to complete a historic treble in the coming weeks. So, it is hardly surprising that Alonso has become the talk of the town in the managerial world, with Real Madrid, Liverpool, and Manchester City keen on signing him.

Widespread reports also pointed to Chelsea being ready to launch the offensive before Alonso decided to stay at Bayer Leverkusen for another season. As for Liverpool, a move for the 42-year-old next summer is unlikely as they will likely appoint a long-term successor to Jurgen Klopp this year.

Meanwhile, Real Madrid might be in the market for a manager next summer, with Carlo Ancelotti in the twilight of his career. The latest report has linked Manchester City with Xabi Alonso amid uncertainties surrounding the future of Pep Guardiola. Recent reports have claimed that the former Barcelona manager might leave Manchester City in 2025.

That has put Manchester City in a spot of bother, considering Guardiola will leave a gaping hole at the Etihad. However, with Real Madrid and Liverpool (less probably) also in the hunt, the battle for his signature will be intriguing.
