Xabi Alonso would prefer to join Liverpool and Bayern Munich if he leaves Bayer Leverkusen at the end of the 2023/24 season.

According to Ben Jacobs on Caught Offside, Xabi Alonso has a preference for his next destination. Liverpool and Bayern Munich are interested in appointing him as their manager ahead of the 2024/25 season. But the 42-year-old will prefer to join the Merseyside club instead of the Bundesliga champions.

Xabi Alonso has become the most popular young manager in the world in the last 12 months. The Spaniard is only in his first job coaching a first-team squad and has come leaps and bounds in it. A legendary midfielder as a footballer, he represented European bigwigs like Liverpool, Real Madrid, and Bayern Munich in his playing days and enjoyed incredible success in his career.

The 42-year-old hung up his boots in 2017 and entered the managerial world a year later while completing his coaching badges. Alonso initially managed Real Madrid’s Under-14 side before taking charge of Real Madrid’s reserve team. But his first senior-level job came with Bayer Leverkusen in 2022.

The Spanish tactician took charge of the Bundesliga club midway through the 2022/23 season and immediately made an impact. But the German giants have taken major strides this term, romping to the top of the Bundesliga table, eight points clear of reigning champions Bayern Munich. So, it is hardly surprising that Alonso has emerged on the radar of top clubs. Liverpool and Bayern Munich are vying for his signature.

Liverpool’s interest in Xabi Alonso has intensified since Jurgen Klopp announced his impending departure. The German tactician will take a hiatus after the 2023/24 season ends due to mental fatigue. So, the Reds need a replacement, with the 42-year-old Spaniard emerging as a viable target.

As for Bayern MunichDie Roten will part ways with Thomas Tuchel when the 2023/24 season ends. The German tactician has overseen a disastrous term, as Bayern might end a campaign without a trophy for the first time in over a decade. So, Alonso has emerged as one of the  candidates to replace Tuchel. But the Bavarian giants face a tall order pursuing the Spanish manager, who prefers Liverpool.

The Bundesliga champions need to convince Alonso that their project is better than Liverpool’s. But with the 42-year-old preferring to return to Anfield, it will be interesting to see if Bayern Munich can secure his services.
