Sunderland have reportedly invited Livingston wonderkid Matthew Knox, who has spent three trial spells with Manchester United, to trial at the Stadium of Light.

The Daily Mail have reported that Sunderland are showing interest in Livingston wonderkid Matthew Knox. The young forward has spent three trial spells at Manchester United and is linked heavily with Scottish giants Rangers, where he had a trial as well. And it seems the Black Cats have entered the race as well.

The report iterates Sunderland have invited Knox to the Stadium of Light to trial with the Premier League club in an attempt to evaluate the 17-year-old. Scotland scout Gordon Chisholm has been keen on the Livingston teen but had almost given up on the player, with the prospect almost destined to be snapped up by Manchester United.

But Manchester United are still procrastinating a transfer for Knox, which may give Sunderland a narrow window to swoop in for the 17-year-old. Rangers also are in contention for the player, with the club having their £75,000 bid knocked back by Livingston.

Knox has previously had trials at Liverpool, Tottenham and Everton as well but these clubs have not been subsequently linked with a move for the player.

Matthew Knox has been reported to be very close to signing for Manchester United. The Red Devils have had the 17-year-old over for trials on three occasions, with the latest coming at the end of December 2016.

It was reported that the Red Devils were exploring the possibility of bringing the player over to the red half of Manchester United on a permanent basis. Livingston has been reported to be holding out for a £150,000 fee that the Red Devils would not have much trouble shelving out.

But, as it stands, the Red Devils are yet to move for the player. And former United boss David Moyes is looking to steal a march on the club that sacked him less than one season into his managerial career at Old Trafford, by beating the club to Knox.

The Scotland Under-17 international is said to be very highly-rated back in his nation. Perhaps, Sunderland’s interest may make United hasten and seal a transfer for Knox.
