Chelsea sound out move for Harry Maguire

Chelsea recently approached Manchester United to ask about Harry Maguire, who has lost his captaincy at Old Trafford.

According to a report by 90min, Harry Maguire is the subject of interest from Chelsea. And the Blues have submitted an enquiry to ask about the situation of the 30-year-old defender. The experienced centre-back recently lost his status as the club captain at Old Trafford.

Harry Maguire joined Manchester United from Leicester City in a world-record deal for a defender in August 2019. The English international cost Manchester United around £80 million. But he has endured a rollercoaster ride at Old Trafford instead of justifying the money the Red Devils invested in him.

The 30-year-old has turned out 175 times thus far for Manchester United, chipping in with seven goals and five assists. Maguire has also served the club as the captain for much of his stint at Old Trafford. But Erik ten Hag recently stripped the experienced centre-back of the captaincy. And the situation at Manchester United has captured the attention of several clubs, including Chelsea.

Chelsea recently joined the race to sign Maguire from Manchester United. And the need for a new centre-back has escalated after Wesley Fofana picked up a long-term injury. The Frenchman has ruptured his ACL and will likely miss the entire 2023/24 season. That has left Mauricio Pochettino with only four recognised centre-backs.

A closer look reveals the inconsistent Trevoh Chalobah, the inexperienced Benoit Badiashile and Levi Colwill, and Thiago Silva, who has entered the twilight years of his career, as Pochettino’s central defensive options. So it behoves Chelsea to invest in a centre-back in the ongoing transfer window. And Maguire has emerged as a viable target for the West London club.

The report claims that the Blues have already sounded out a move for the 30-year-old. And with Manchester United unlikely to stand in his way, Maguire’s future is uncertain. But Chelsea will likely face stiff competition from other clubs, including Newcastle United and West Ham United, for the English international.

But with the West London club making the first move, a summer move might be on the cards. Meanwhile, Manchester United will take a heavy loss on the investment of £80 million. But it will be interesting to see if they are willing to strengthen a rival like Chelsea by selling Maguire to them.
