Arsenal Report: Gunners Begin Gundogan Talks; Signing Mandzukic Is A Priority

FC Barcelona transfer news

Arsenal have started talks to sign Ilkay Gundogan and Wenger has made Mario Mandzukic a priority signing.

Ilkay Gundogan has reportedly rejected a contract extension and is believed to be interested in a move to the Premier League.

The German midfielder is in talks with Borussia Dortmund over a new contract but reports suggest that interest from England has caught his fancy and he is keen on moving to the country. Gundogan has just 18 months left on his current contract and if the midfielder does not commit to himself to a new contract, Borussia Dortmund will be open to selling him in the summer.

According to reports, Arsenal, who are long-term admirers of the Germany international, have been alerted by the situation and the Daily Mirror reports that contact has been made over a deal to bring Gundogan to Arsenal.

Arsene Wenger has recently admitted his desire of signing a defensive midfielder during the January transfer window and Ilkay Gundogan might just be the right man for the role. It is believed that it will cost the Gunners A?16 million to sign the midfielder.

The 24-year old will be a great signing for a bargain price if the Gunners managed to bring him on board for A?16 million. However, the midfielder has a history of long term injury woes, which might be a concern for Arsene Wenger.

On the other hand, Wenger is also ready to boost his frontline and is believed to be pushing to sign Atletico Madrid striker Mario Mandzukic.

Mandzukic, who was linked with a move to the Premier League in the summer with Chelsea and Arsenal interested, eventually signed for Atletico Madrid, where he has managed to score 14 goals in 22 games.

His form has caught Wengera s eye and Spanish reports suggest that the Frenchman has made the forward a priority signing. The Croatian is valued at A?25 million.

The recent departure of Lukas Podolski and Yaya Sanogo set to leave the club, Arsenal have fallen short of striking options.

Mandzukic moved to Atletico Madrid from Bayern Munich in the summer of 2014. Since then he has been in great form for the Spanish champions. It will be difficult for Arsenal to convince the striker to move to England, especially mid-season.

Atletico Madrid acquired the signature of Mandzukic from Bayern for a transfer fee in the region of A?17.5 million. The Croatia international had earlier claimed to have rejected approaches from England to join Atletico Madrid.
