Real Madridai??i??s breathtaking win over Atletico Madrid made for a well deserved end for this yearsai??i?? UEFA Champions League. In many manners, this yearsai??i?? competition was the most competitive in nature where we saw a comparatively low budget team like Atletico making all the way to the final while traditional European giants like AC Milan and Barcelona failed to make much impact on the competition this year.
Ronaldo was of course the best player of the tournament but there were plenty other top class performances as well. The likes of Koke, Matuidi and Draxler announced their arrival on global stage while traditional big names like Xavi and Schweinstiger failed to make much impact. THT has prepared a UCL Team of the Season where we have considered various factors like individual performance, progress made by the club of the given player and of course his share in the success/failure of his own club.
Needless to say, both Madrid based clubs have dominated our list but players from some other clubs have made their cut as well.
In goal, we have Atletico Madridai??i??s Thibaut Courtois. The on-loan Chelsea star was like a wall between the goal posts as he secured five clean sheets in 12 games. Such was the level of his performances that he overshadowed his Real Madrid counterpart Iker Casillas.
Real Madrid youngster Dani Carvajal is our right back. The young Spaniard played a crucial role on keeping tabs on dangerous Frank Ribery in his sidesai??i?? semi final clash against Bayern Munich. Throughout the season too, Carvajal was very consistent with his performances and made this position his own by replacing Alvaro Arbeloa successfully.
Atletico Madridai??i??s Diego Godin was rock solid in the heart of the defence as his team was successful in letting in least number of goals in the competition. Apart from his quality defending, Godin also managed to score crucial two goals in the tournament.
Alongside Godin is Real Madridai??i??s Sergio Ramos. Ramos was the best defender of this title winning side. Additionally, he also managed to score three important goals in the Semi final and Final which proved very important in their bid to win La Decima.
Bayern Munichai??i??s David Alaba is now regarded as the worldai??i??s best left back and he again proved this season why this is so. Alaba was a constant threat to the defence of other sidesai??i?? as he frequently made deadly runs forward and his defensive instincts were also perfect.
First in our three-man midfield is Paris Saint Germain stalwart Blaise Matuidi. Playing in the centre of the midfield, the Frenchman was always successful in making timely tackles. Matuidi is widely considered as Ai??the worldai??i??s best central defender and this year he proved it with his excellent performances.
New Real boss Carlo Ancelotti has re-invented Luka Modric this season as the Croation was the pillar of strong Madrid midfield this season. The pass completion ratio of Modric in whole tournament is staggering 90 percent.
Young Atletico Madrid star Koke completes our midfielder trio. Koke was arguably the best young player of this yearsai??i?? Champions League. His excellent passing and superb vision makes him the star to watch out for.
Our three-man attack begins withAi??Cristiano Ronaldo. The Portuguese star all goal scoring records this season. During the whole tournament, CR7 was almost unstoppable as he made excellent runs through both the wings and no defender was successful in predicting him.
Atletico Madrid Diego Costa is our number 9. Although he missed almost complete final, still he managed to bag 8 goals in UCL. Costa was the spearhead of Atleticoai??i??s attack and was a constant threat to the opposite sidesai??i?? defenders.
Lionel Messi was not at his usual brilliant best this season but still, he managed to score respectable 8 goals. Messi was the best player of complacent Barca side which got out in the quarter final stages for the first time since 2007.
Despite enjoying successful campaign, the likes of Philip Lahm, Zlatan Ibrahimovic and John Terry have missed out in our team there was simple too much competition.
