A History Of Footballs Used In the Premier League

Itai??i??s big and round and it has had a steady impact on the evolution of the game. Let us take a look at the evolution of the Football in the Premier League.

We discuss teams, tactics, transfers, referees and managers, but one of the most important aspects of the game evades our attention – the football itself. Despite skepticism, the ball used to play has a great impact on a particular game. To a layman one leather sphere might not be too different from another, but for a player the subtle differences affects their game.

There is no accurate dating as to when the first football was invented. There are stories of Chinese, The Mayanai??i??s, Egyptians and Greeks civilization playing a part in the evolution of the first known football. From using animal hide stuffed with cat guts to linen wrapped around flax seeds, football has come a long way. However by the middle ages the popularity of the sport had grown and more focus had gone into improving the ball along with improved technology. The concept of using leather to maintain shape, and ensuring that the sheep or pig bladder filled with air, had gained fame.

The First Football

The 1930 World Cup Ball

Charles Goodyear, yes the same guy who started good year tires, is credited with making the first round soccer ball. Up untill that point rubber was avoided as it deformed in heat and became sticky, but good year discovered the method of treating this problem by a process called vulcanization that ensured the ball does not loose shape and at the same time bounced. Eventually by 1872 English Football Association set the standard size for match balls which is being used till date.

In the 1930s leather balls with panels and laces were used to keep the bladder intact and within, such was used in the first ever World Cup in 1930. These brown mounds were heavy and quiet difficult to kick around, however they served the purpose and lasted longer than usual in the harsh mud surfaces they were used on. By 1955, white footballs were introduced and were being water proofed for better visibility and durability. The leather panels were hand stitched instead of being laced as they retained shape and were easier to control.

The Premier League ball History

  1. The Mitre ai??i?? The first division league and FA Cup competition in England had for years adhered to using the Mitre ball as the official match ball. When the first division converted itself into the Premier League know to us today, the league decided to ensure Mitre continued to supply the official match balls. This led to the birth of the Mitre proMax, used from 1993 to 1995. An all-white ball with inward pointing arrows in red and blue. However the ball that got them the lime light was their Ultimax. This ball became the official Premier league ball for half a decade up until 2000. The White panel synthetic rubber ball with greater than and lesser than symbols became the face of the Premier league as all fans bought one to emulate their favorite stars.
  2. In-house Club balls ai??i?? For a certain period in the late 90ai??i??s clubs decided to use balls by their official kit sponsors as a form of loyalty. When playing at home against the likes of Chelsea, we would often observe the use of the Umbro ball with the brand logo plastered across the surface. Other teams either used the official or their own sponsorai??i??s ball.
  3. Nikeai??i??s Rein ai??i?? by the year 2000, Mitre was dropped and the Football Association decided to make things fair by introducing one compulsory match ball and Nike was chosen to supply them.
    1. Nike Geo Merlin ai??i?? The ball was introduce in 2000 and was used till the end of the 2002 season. Having been kicked to the back of the net 992 and 1000 times in its use. It is the ball with which Les Ferdinand scored the premier Leagueai??i??s 10,000th goal and also aided Spurs Legend Ledley King score the Leagues fastest ever goal (9.9 sec). This also happened to be the ball with which Arsenal won the league without a single defeat the whole season.
    2. Nike Geo Merlin 2 ai??i?? Used in the 2002-2003 and 2003-2004 season it saw a total of 2012 goals scored with it. The ball didnai??i??t differ much but boasted of different colours and better graphics. Nike boasted that they had made one of the fastest and most accurate footballs the world had ever seen using a light but durable synthetic rubber material.
    3. Total 90 Aerow ai??i?? Prevailing as the official premier league ball from year 2004 to the end of 2008 season. This ball became somewhat of a cult classic. With its reputed disc around the nike logo. This became the first nike ball to feature foam as a layer on the casing in order to give it a cushioned effect on the feet and a more controlled bounce which created what came to be known as trampoline effect which cause the ball to leave the feet at a faster pace when struck. This ball marked Chelseaai??i??s first premier league title. The ballai??i??s second version in 2005/05 season saw the first of its kind, a high visibility ball which was yellow and blue in colour so that the ball could be easily spotted even in thick fog. This ball lived through Alen Shearerai??i??s recor 260th Premier League goal and also made it through two golden boots for legendary French striker Thierry Henry. The Aerow ii which was a newer version of the original also saw Teddy Sheringham become the oldest premier league player to score and took part in the highest scoring Premier League game (Portsmouth 7 ai??i?? 4 Reading). The also saw Derby County being the lowest scoring team to be relegated ( 11 points).
    4. Nike Total 90 Omni ai??i?? In 2008/09 season, Nike after listening to Beyonceai??i??s Single ladies, decided to lose the rings and gave it an asymmetrical graphic design that made the

ball flicker when rotated that ensured higher visibility. They also boasted that the design distributed the pressure more evenly so that there is a consistant and power full strike which made scoring easy. Ironically that season Van Der Saar kept 14 clean sheets in the season.

    5. Nike Total 90 Ascente &Ai?? T90 Tracer ai??i?? The two balls employed in the 2009/10 and 2010/11 season though visually different in terms of graphics employed the same technology. A synthetic casing was added to create a golf ball type dimpled effect that made equilised the airflow over around the ball and ensured there was no unpredictable changes in direction as the players had complained after playing with the 2010 world cupai??i??s Jabulani ball.
    6. Nike Seitiro ai??i?? This was the first non-total 90 ball since the geo merlin. Used in the 2011/12 season it had some asymmetric graphics at strategically thought out positions that improved visibility of the ball and featured nikeai??i??s RaDaR technology which stood for rapid decisive and response. Till date no one knows what this technology did or how it worked. But it was clear that it handed Manchester City their first Premier League trophy.
    7. Nike Maxim ai??i?? The new ball continued to boast of the RaDaR technology and also of a 360 degree sweet spot that saw 1063 goals scored with it in the 2012/13 Premier League, which included Tim Howardai??i??s 102 yard free-kick.
    8. Nike Incyte ai??i?? The Ball used in the previous season was claimed to be the most technologically advanced ball ever made which included Ai??a 5 layer on the casing which improved the trajectory of the ball at a greater speed. The RaDaR technology for increased visibility was continued to be used here as well.

Nike has recently released the Ordem which is to be used in 2014-15 Premier League and features a fluorescent highlight around its panels. Its impact on the season is yet to be seen and a judgment can be passed only after players have used them. With the football evolving in so many fronts itai??i??s only a mystery as to how it would influence the game in the future.
