Nicknamed Der Dinosaurier (The Dinosaur), Hamburger SV have been in the Bundesliga since its very beginning in the 1963-1964 season. Peaking in the late 70ai??i??s ai??i?? mid 80ai??i??s with 3 German Championships, 3 Pokals and couple a of cups in Europe, The Red Shorts from the north of Germany are one of the best supported clubs in the Bundesliga enjoying packed houses every week. After a decent 2012-2013 campaign that saw them finish 7th in the table, the side has largely struggled to get things together this season. Their recent form has been bad to say the least, shipping out 20 goals over the last 6 games that has seen them stuck at 17th in the table for the second half of the campaign. Hamburg have been on the wrong end of a 5-0 drubbing by Bayern, while they have been the victim of three consecutive 3-0 losses to Hertha, Hoffenheim and Schalke. 6 league defeats coupled with a 5-0 quarter final pounding by Bayern this midweek has left coach Bert van Marwijk in the same position as his predecessor Thorsten Fink.
Hamburgai??i??s issues were quite noticeable during the course of last season even though the club only just missed out on Europe with a 7th placed finish. The offense was in the hands of now departed Son Heung-Min who made 30 appearances scoring 11 goals, while returning Rafael van der Vaart was at his inspirational best, featuring in a number of assists. The duo along with young Maximilian Beister and Ivo IliA?eviAi?? provided the attacking force Hamburg needed while under-rated forward Artjoms RudAi??evs kept opposition defenders and keepers busy. But there were issues lurking behind the three attacking midfielders of the 4-2-3-1. Young midfielders Milan Badelj and Tolgay Arslan who featured predominantly in central midfield, offering a good focal point in terms of propagating attacks but failed miserably when it came to shielding the back four and winning possession back.
The Hamburg backline of Diekmeier, Westermann, Mancienne/Bruma and others never projected the confidence of being able to contain quick counter attacks or face-off against world class dribbling. The 9-2 scoreline against Bayern Munich was their worst performance in a season and they conceded 53 goals, 11 more than what they scored. But favorable results and inconsistent forms of Mainz, Hannover and MAi??nchengladbach gave them their highest finish in half a decade.
Whether it was over-confidence based on the 2012-2013 campaign, belief in their youths coming through or lack of funds, the Hamburg management and Fink only brought in recruitmentsAi??in the form of young defenders Johan Djourou and Lasse Sobiech, both of whom have had minimum experience in playing in a back-line for a full campaign. The midfield saw no new faces while top scorers Son Heung-Min and Rudnevs (in the winter) left.
2013-2014 started in a similar fashion for Hamburg with the back line unable to stop the leaking of goals, but there has been a significant difference when compared to last season. Hamburgai??i??s replacements for the departed Son in the form of Cameroonian Zoua and young Pierre-Michel Lasogga have not inspired similar goal scoring antics as last season. Rudnevs was strangely benched for the first half of the season and sent out on loan to Hannover in January. To make matters worse, talisman Rafael van der Vaart hasnai??i??t been his usual self this season and the lack of another creative player is really hurting the side. Finkai??i??s experiments with a back three early in the season and Bert van Marwijkai??i??s re-shuffling of the backline hasnai??i??t really worked wonders. Currently placed 17th, Der Dinosaurier have conceded the maximum number of goals, shipping out 47 in 20 games.
Milan Badelj and Tolgay Arslan have continued their partnership in midfield which has pretty much led to no ball winning abilities in the midfield. Badelj has averaged only 37 % success rate in his tackles this season while Arslan has averaged a similar 31 %. The duo have also not troubled opposition keepers with long shots averaging quite low in this respect. The appointment of Bert van Marwijk was expected to bring in some steel to the midfield, but the continued relegation of the likes of Petr JirA?A?ek, Robert Tesche and Gojko KaA?ar to the bench has certainly reduced the combative nature of the midfield.
Even though young Lasogga has started brightly and has shown the Bundesliga that he is made of class material, the burden of leading an attack is simply a lot to ask out of a 22 year old. Winger Hakan Ai??alhanoAYlu, full back Lam Zhi Gin and promising 17 year old center-back Jonathan Tah have been the only silver lining in Hamburgai??i??s season thus far. For a well supported club that was expected to fight for a Europa league spot this season, things have gone from bad to worse for the side from the north of Germany.
Gaffer Bert van Marwijk has quite openly admitted that he and his side have concerns of relegation while skipper Van der Vaart admitted his side was gripped with fear after fans surrounded the stadium protesting after their 3-0 loss to Hertha last weekend. Fear is something Van Marwijk certainly wonai??i??t want his side to have as they play a crucial game against fellow strugglers Eintracht Braunschweig at the Eintracht-Stadion on Saturday. Three points on matchday 21 is an absolute must considering NA?rnbergai??i??s new found form and Stuttgart, Frieburg and Bremen themselves going through a bit of a crisis. For a club of Hamburgai??i??s stature and having celebrated 50 years in the top flight last season, relegation will be quite unthinkable for their fans and for the league as a whole. With 14 games to go, Bert van Marwijk has quite a task on his hands to get things going right for Der Dinosaurier.
