We discuss Sir Alex Fergusonai??i??s journey into the latter half of his tenure at Old Trafford as described by him in Part 1 of this feature.
Reading Sir Alex Fergusonai??i??s autobiography is a great insight into the mind of the man who is arguably the greatest ever football manager in history. Ferguson describes his working-class upbringing in Scotland, his first managerial stints with St. Mirren, while he was still managing and running his local pub in Glasgow, and then his successful trophy laden time with Aberdeen before making a switch to Old Trafford in the cold November of 1986. He alludes to this working-class background of Scottish people that gives them qualities he admires the most ai??i?? perseverance and hard working ethic.
And this in part is the reason he recommended David Moyes for the United job in May of last year. Ferguson sees the same qualities he thought were characteristic of himself in Moyes. In the book Ferguson remarks that he was once asked why he doesnai??i??t smile during a game, to which he replied that he was there to win the match, not to smile. Ferguson says the Scots are like that. Clever and witty off the pitch but stone cold serious on it. And he saw similar traits in Moyes. In fact, itai??i??s fair to say Sir Alex saw a lot of a younger version of himself in Moyes.
Arsene Wenger
The seriousness on the pitch that Ferguson associated with himself and Moyes was also seen in Arsene Wenger, who Ferguson regards as a friend despite the explosive nature of matches against his Arsenal side. Ferguson describes Wenger as a cool, calm person off the pitch, someone who can discuss almost anything under the sun with you, but on the pitch he was a different man. Wenger absolutely hated losing, a feeling Ferguson identifies with. It was this feeling that transformed Wenger and Ferguson from genial people to aggressive masterminds when the whistle blew to kick the game off. But Ferguson also felt Wenger took losing personally. He could not accept his own sideai??i??s shortcomings in defeats and would become defensive to the point that he would berate legitimate tackles on his players during games, calling them unfair.
Ferguson remembers clearly the Pizzagate incident of October 2004. Wenger had brought his Arsenal side to Old Trafford eyeing a 50th consecutive unbeaten match in the Premier League, but his run was broken by United. Seething, Wenger was having a go at Ruud van Nistelrooy, who he was extremely critical off, calling him a ai???player who looks to go down under a challengeai??? and once commenting that he rejected Van Nistelrooy, when he had the chance of signing him for Arsenal, deeming him not good enough to play for him. Ferguson was irritated with Wengerai??i??s attempts at haranguing the Dutchman and told Wenger to leave his players alone. Ferguson describes Wenger as incensed at losing the game. He was livid and had his ai???fists clenchedai???. The next thing Ferguson remembers is there was pizza all over him, the culprit of which is thought to be Cesc Fabregas, though it was never confirmed.
Ferguson thought that defeat ai???scrambled Arseneai??i??s brainai??? and spoiled his relationship with Wenger and his assistant Pat Rice. The two managers made up years later when United beat Arsenal in the 2009 Champions League semi final at the Emirates and Wenger invited Ferguson into his room and congratulated him on the win. In the later years Ferguson saw Wenger and himself as two survivors of the managerial merry go round in the Premier League as managers at other clubs fell by the wayside, and the two developed mutual respect for each other.
David Beckham
The one thing that stands out from his book is control. Ferguson loved being in control. Losing control of his dressing room was one of his biggest fears. So when David Beckhamai??i??s fashionable lifestyle got in the way of the football, Ferguson decided he had to go. There is an incident Ferguson describes when he says Beckham showed up at a team dinner in a beanie, apparently covering his new hairstyle to be unveiled for the press the next day. Ferguson asked Beckham to remove the hat for the dinner but he wouldnai??i??t. The next day again during training, Beckham had the beanie hat on and Ferguson couldnai??i??t take it. He told Beckham to remove it or heai??i??s off the team which made Beckham go berserk. He took it off to show a shaved head. ai???Is that
what this was all about? A shaved head that nobody was to see?ai??? demanded Ferguson. The plan was to take off the hat minutes before kick off to unveil the new look. At that point Ferguson saw a talented player getting consumed by media and publicity agents.
The famous boot kicking incident happened in February 2003 after United lost an FA Cup fifth round match to Arsenal. Beckham was blamed by Ferguson for not tracking back for Arsenalai??i??s second goal scored by Sylvain Wiltord. ai???He merely joggedai??? says Ferguson. Beckham did not take the criticism well and swore at Ferguson. Ferguson moved towards him and as he walked, he kicked a boot lying on the dressing room floor and it hit Beckham right above the eye. Beckham rose to have a go at Ferguson and had to be restrained by players. It was then that Ferguson knew David Beckham thought he had become bigger than Alex Ferguson. He had to go.
Roy Keane
Same was the case with Roy Keane after his damning interview to MUTV in November 2005, in which he criticized the youngsters at United for their below par performances, singling out Rio Ferdinand, Darren Fletcher, Alan Smith and Edwin van der Sar. The never-aired interview was shown to the manager, staff and the players and it again became clear to Ferguson that he would lose control of the dressing room if Keane were allowed to stay. Ferguson analyzed that the reason for much of Keaneai??i??s angst was that he was getting on in years and it was hard for the Irishman to accept that he was no longer able to perform as the combative box to box midfielder he had played as all his life. Keane had to go, although Ferguson has always considered him to be his best signing at United.
Van Nistelrooy
Ruud van Nistelrooy was scouted by Fergusonai??i??s brother Martin, who had seen him play at SC Heerenveen. However, Van Nistelrooy had then just moved to PSV Eindhoven and United were made to wait. Ferguson made his move in 2000, but Van Nistelrooy failed the medical. PSV insisted the Dutch striker was fit but United declined. In a bid to force a move, PSV held a training session with Van Nistelrooy aimed at filming and proving his fitness levels. The training session was disastrous and the video filmed Van Nistelrooy screaming in pain as his leg gave way during a jump. Nevertheless, United stuck by him and post operation Van Nistelrooy was a United player in July 2001.
Ferguson says there was no trouble from Van Nistelrooy initially, but nearing the end of the 2002-03 season, after two seasons at the club, Van Nistelrooy signed a new contract with the club, but asked for the insertion of a release clause of A?35 million for Real Madrid. Ferguson gave in and the release clause was inserted. Trouble began soon at the end of the 2004-05 season when Van Nistelrooy started to force a move to Real Madrid. He was not prepared to wait for Rooney and Ronaldo to develop. Ferguson convinced him to stay and bought Vidic and Evra in January 2006 to strengthen the squad, but the relationship with Van Nistelrooy deteriorated.
Van Nistelrooy constantly made fun of Ronaldo and his relationship with assistant manager Carlos Queiroz. The tipping point was reached when during the Carling Cup final against Wigan Athletic in 2006 when Ferguson started with Louis Saha up front since the Frenchman had played all matches in the Carling Cup, but promised Van Nistelrooy a role from the bench. However, as the match was already won in the second half, Ferguson decided to send on Vidic and Evra so that they would get a feel of winning a trophy at United and help them settle in. Van Nistelrooy lost it when Ferguson told him about his decision. ai???You ——ai??? said Van Nistelrooy. Ferguson never understood the reason for the change in Van Nistelrooyai??i??s behavior although the Dutch striker apologized to Ferguson in January 2010. Maybe he was trying to force a move to Real Madrid, which is what Ferguson had to do after such an altercation. Control of the dressing room was more important than one playerai??i??s whim.
Mistakes
Ferguson also admits mistakes made on his part during Unitedai??i??s lean period from 2002 to 2006, during which time they won just one Premier League, one FA Cup and one Carling Cup. Fergusonai??i??s first regret was letting Jaap Stam go, which was an error in judgment. Stam was 30 at the time and a A?16.5 million offer from Lazio was too good to resist. However, Stam left a void that was hard to fill. Another major mistake was not replacing Peter Schmeichel with a quality ai???keeper. United were tracking a few goalkeepers. In January 1999, Mark Bosnich was looked at but Ferguson was unsure of him and went to look at Edwin van der Sar instead. However, by the time Van der Sar was recommended to chairman Martin Edwards, he had already shaken hands with Bosnich.
This led to a string of goalkeepers who tried to replace Schmeichel but couldnai??i??t. During a six year period, Bosnich, Raimond van der Gouw, Fabien Barthez, Massimo Taibi, Andy Goram, Tim Howard and Roy Carroll were tried before Van der Sar was finally signed in July 2005. Other mistakes included buying Juan Sebastian Veron but not knowing where to play him with Scholes, Keane and Nicky Butt in the same midfield, buying players like Eric Djemba-Djemba, Kleberson and David Bellion, and missing out on players who had come close to becoming United players like Paolo di Canio, Ronaldinho and Alan Shearer.
Ferguson gives a very personal account of his work at United, at times wistfully wanting his staff or players to knock on his door and ask him for a cup of tea when he was weighed under big decisions to mull over. His accounts give us a very personal view into his decision making and the ideology he lived by during his stint at Manchester United.
