Liverpool FC attacker Raheem Sterling has reportedly stalled contract negotiations as he is unsatisfied with the clauses of the deal being offered to him, after the Reds meekly bowed out of the Champions League.
British media outletAi??The TelegraphAi??have reported: “LiverpoolAi??and Sterling are ai???nowhere near any agreementai??? on a new contract, according to a source close to negotiations, although there are hopes of an eventual resolution”.
Liverpool have been negotiating a contract extension with Sterling for a while, and both Brendan Rodgers and Raheem Sterling have spoken on the matter in the past. The Reds are keen to tie down their most valuable player at the moment, to a long-term deal. The 20 year old’s current deal has more than two years remaining. Sterling is presently on roughly A?30,000- a-week wage, along with added bonuses. Liverpoolai??i??s new offer has been understood to be A?70,000 a week with further ‘handsome’ bonuses for Liverpool’s progress in other major competitions.
The stall in negotiations is now apparently due to the fact that since Liverpool are out of the Champions League, and are not doing too well in the Premier League, ‘the prospect of additional payments is clearly less likely’. Hence, the new offer and its bonuses are not acceptable for the player now.
One thing that is in Liverpool’s favor is that Sterling and Rodgers enjoy a great, healthy relationship and the 20 year old hasAi??always indicated his desire to remain at Anfield and is ai???committed to the clubai???.
Liverpool manager Brendan Rodgers indicated earlier this season that Sterling’s contract would get sorted in time, and the player was keen on staying,
“Yes. Absolutely adamant. I donai??i??t think there is anything other than that. His agent is a good agent and he understands this is the perfect place for him,” Rodgers said in October.
“The boy is remarkably happy here and there are no secondary thoughts about anything else other than continuing to play for Liverpool.
“Also, to continue with his development because he still has a lot of growth and for that the best place for him to be is here. His representatives respect that and the club respects that. So that will get sorted out in time.”
Currently, Sterling is Liverpool’s best player and the club would do anything to ensure the likes of Paris Saint Germain and Real Madrid don’t prize the player away. Sterling would not break into the starting 11 of both these sides, and his importance and indispensability to the Reds means that Anfield remains the best place for him to maximize his potential. It remains likely that the club and the England international will be able to work out the differences and a new deal can be negotiated, which would be of agreement to both Liverpool and Sterling.
