Aston Villa center back Ron Vlaar has revealed that he hasn’t had any contact from Manchester United over a potentialAi??move despite strong rumours that a deal could happen come January.
Vlaar also gave a hint that there have been other clubs who contactedAi??him over a move but he felt that staying at Villa would be a better option. The Dutch international told Algemeen Dagblad, “There was interest [after the World Cup]. But never from the calibre of clubs I would leave Aston Villa for.
“Manchester United? I’ve never heard anything from them. If a club had been seriously interested I would have noticed. That hasn’t been the case.”
Vlaar’s agentAi??Arnold Oosterveer had revealed last month that Southampton were one of the clubs who were interested in him and had admitted that his client will move in January if he finds a better and more ambitious club.
Manchester United have been linked with a host of defenders, but with their summer spending crossing more thanAi??A?150m, it’s unlikely that they’ll invest huge money on one player. As a result, Villa’s Vlaar could be an ideal signing. The 29-year old is probably at the peak of his career and because his contract expires in the summer of 2015, it’s likely that Villa will sell him in January else they run the risk of losing him for free. Vlaar’s market valueAi??is aroundAi??Ai??ai??i??6.5m considering what’s remaining on his contract and his current form; a fee that Manchester United can easily afford. If Villa sell him for that fee, then they’ll still end up making a profit as they signed him for less than half the fee in 2012.
Since joining from Feyenoord in 2012 for Ai??ai??i??3.8m in 2012, Vlaar has had an impressive two-year spell at Villa. He was handed the captain’s armband in the first season and did not disappoint as his leadership skills and decision making at the back helped his side survive relegation. His form was so good that he was one of the first names on the team sheet in the Dutch national squad and played in the World Cup where his side finished third.
He was expected to help his sideAi??into a better showing this season, but a calf injury in early September ruled him out for a few weeks and his side lost three games during that phase. However, he has played the last four games and despite his picking up just two points, Vlaar has looked good.
Louis Van Gaal and Manchester United have missed a defender with good leadership skills since the departure of Nemanja Vidic and Vlaar could be the player they want. Van Gaal has managed him before at the national setup and could make a move in January.
