Liverpool manager Brendan Rodgers has agreed a new long-term contract and has said that his side will continue to fight with their lives to clinch the Premier League title.
Reports suggest that Brendan Rodgers has agreed a new Liverpool contract – and could put pen to paper before the end of the week.
The Liverpool manager has 12 months, plus the option of another year, remaining on his deal but owners Fenway Sports Group have rewarded him for taking the club back into the Champions League with terms that are set to run to 2018.
It is understood that the Liverpool boss has agreed on a four-season extension to his current A?2.5million-a year contract. The new contract will see him get an attractive pay rise and make him one of the highest-earning managers in the Premier League.
There were reports suggesting Barcelona were interested in the services of the ex-Swansea manager and were going to approach him in the summer.
It seems that the Liverpool owners have taken the preliminary steps to ensure that they secure their manager’s future and loyalties.
This comes as a soother for the Liverpool fans after the club’s capitulation against Crystal Palace. Liverpool needed the win to keep pressure on Manchester City and were looking set to do that for most parts of the game as they had a 3-0 lead. However, a horrible twelve minutes at the end of the second half saw Tony Pulis’s Palace get three back. While it is commendable that Palace did so, all the goals were due to Ai??mistakes by the back four.
Speaking at the club’s end of season awards dinner, Rodgers said:
‘This season the players have allowed the supporters to dream and for a club of this size and magnitude – to be a point ahead at the top of the table with a week to go you never know what can happen – it has been magnificent.Ai??I promise for the time I am here we will fight for our lives and we won’t finish until Newcastle.’
“Last night was difficult. If you were in the changing room last night you would have felt how much it mattered to everyone.
“The key thing to remember is the journey we are on is going to have good and bad times but through it all we have to stick together as that is the Liverpool way.We will finish the season strong and keep going to strive to be the best.”
Even though Liverpool might have let the title slip up, there is no doubt in how far the Reds have come this season and manager Brendan Rodgers is hugely responsible for the incredible stride his team has made. Rodgers had earlier thanked the owners of the club for the trust and belief they had invested in him:
