Liverpool FC are in the hunt for another striker before the window closes, according to manager Brendan Rodgers
Liverpool have so far enjoyed a busy transfer window. The RedsAi??are currently awaiting the completion of their eighth transfer as Alberto Moreno completes his A?12m move from Sevilla.
“I’m really, really happy with the business that we’ve done,” said Rodgers in his first pre-match press conference ahead of the side’s first Premier League game against Southampton
ai???We needed to develop the squad this year. We had a sustained challenge last season in the Premier League where we had 12 or 13 players, so irrespective of the people that went out this summer we needed more depth.
“It will allow us to cope with injuries, to cope with all the competitions, and if we can add one or two more in the areas that we want, then we would have had a very, very good window.Ai??We didn’t sign anyone in January, so we had to make it count this summer and I would say this will be our biggest window for a few years.”
However, the Merseyside club visibility need another attacker- especially because the club needs enough depth to compete in four competitions, make a good return to the Champions League as well as mount another title challenge. Moreover, given that the Loic Remy deal fell off at the last moment due to alleged medical reasons and that Sunderland boss Gus Poyet is positive about signing Fabio Borini from the club, Liverpool could only have two strike options for next season- Daniel Sturridge and Rickie Lambert- which would obviously be a worry for the club.
Brendan Rodgers understands this and has said that the club is hoping to sign a striker before the window ends but won’t resort to panic buys.
“We’ll aim to do that [add a striker] right until the end,” added the manager.
“The money is there, but it’s not as if there’s panic to buy.Ai??It is something we will look to complete before the end of the window, but if we do not add upfront, it means the right player did not become available to us.”
Liverpool enjoyed a highly successful season last time out, finishing the league in the second place. But Rodgers said that last seasonai??i??s relative success is now in the past, and he now hopes to lift his first trophy with the club.
ai???It counts for nothing what happened last year, thatai??i??s all gone now, but one thing weai??i??ll carry on from that is the belief,ai??? he said.
ai???Weai??i??re really focused on the next games, weai??i??re end-to-end now into a real long, hard season ahead but a really exciting season because of the talents and the developments of the players.
ai???We, like the top teams, would like to win a trophy. That would be an aim for ourselves but of course in the league itai??i??s about sustaining the Champions League football and for that you want to arrive in fourth.
ai???Once youai??i??ve consolidated that then you can look beyond that. That would be our aim, certainly this season.”
In regards to making another title challenge, Rodgers said, “I’ve seen some odds and we’re not even in the top four. People will rightly look to Manchester City and Chelsea but we are here to challenge.”
Luis Suarez was the team’s talisman last time out. But the Northern Irishman feels that Liverpool can cope without the Uruguayan.
“You saw against Dortmund we have goals in the team,” he said.
“We had evidence of that last season as well and over the two years I’ve been here when Luis hasn’t played we have won most of our games.
The spotlight is on the team, we wonai??i??t be relying on Daniel Sturridge to score goals. The group has been developing and working well.Ai??Suarez was a great talent, but we scored more goals from other parts of team.
