Liverpool are interested in West Brom’s Saido Berahino.
The 21 year old West Brom striker has impressed everyone with his wonderful performances this season and already has 7 goals to his name. It is no surprise that Liverpool, who are struggling with Daniel Sturridge on the sidelines and misfiring Mario Balotelli in the attack, are linked with the West Brom striker, who seems to be in incredible touch at the moment.
According to reports, the Reds could enter a bidding war with Tottenham, who the Baggies value at over A?25m. Liverpool are said to be opening their bid at A?15m but with Tottenham interested, the price is likely to rise. It is also understood that West Brom boss Alan Irvine is not interested in anything belowAi??A?25m.
Berahino has scored more times in the league than any Albion player managed in the whole of last season and is the top-scoring Englishman.
Berahino is nicknamed ‘Defoe’ on account of his finishing ability and according to teammate Victor Anichebe, he loves it.
The 21 year old has made appearances at various youth levels for England and represented England at the 2010 UEFA European Under-17 Championship contributing one goal as England won the tournament. He would be hoping for an England call-up soon and can expect it with the form he is presently in. Roy Hodgson is building a team for the future and if the Burundi born player can continue being this prolific, he might get a call-up for Euro 2016 in France.
THT Verdict
It would be interesting to see if Liverpool would pay this kind of a sum for another Englishman, knowing that shots are already being fired at them for overpaying for Adam Lallana, who is yet to prove his worth. Adam has scored a goal and shown glimpses of attacking prowess but with the entire team struggling at the moment, he hasn’t exactly been a shining light for the club, which with his price, he should have.
Mario Balotelli, Liverpool’s first choice striker in the absence of Daniel Sturridge, is running incredibly low on confidence and is yet to find the net for the Reds in the Premier League. Off pitch matters haven’t helped, nor is him being used as a solo striker, but the player has missed some gasping chances which ideally should have been put at the back of the net. This only shows the lack of confidence. It is certain that once he gets his first goal (in the Premier League, second overall), things are likely to start working out with him again. However, Liverpool’s patient might run out sooner than expected. A last minute tap in by the Italian could have got the Reds three points and put them in a great spot as United, Chelsea, Spurs and City all dropped points. Hence it is understandable for the fans to be upset by him and for Brendan Rodgers to also consider another option as Daniel Sturridge is an injury prone player and is yet to feature for Liverpool since the Tottenham match in late August.
However, Liverpool shouldn’t pay 25m for another young, raw striker. His price is certainly inflated and the Reds need someone refined at the moment, if they want to pay that kind of money- someone who has more experience, and way more goals. Divock Origi, 20, will return from loan next season and in him, Rodgers will have a young talent with a lot of budding potential. Hence, if they want to spend money, they should do so on a more experienced striker. Moreover, once Sturridge returns, one can expect Balotelli to hit form again, as he would be employed in a two man strike system, one he prefers as well. And once the ex- AC Milan gets his respite goal, things would start to look much better for him and Liverpool.
