Sunderland and Gus Poyet have been kept waiting as Fabio Borini still remains unsure about his future at Liverpool FC.
Fabio Boriniai??i??s future has come under immense speculation this summer with L:iverpool reportedly keen to offload the Italian striker. But Borini is still looking to establish himself at Anfield and this has stalled Sunderlandai??i??s hopes of signing him permanently in this transfer window.
The 23-year-old joined Liverpool in 2012 after having a good loan spell at Roma, but failed to establish himself in the starting line-up at the Merseyside club, making only 13 appearances in the league in the 2012-13 season. The former Chelsea forward was loaned out to Sunderland at the start of last season and he played a key role in saving them from relegation and in their wonderful cup run.
Borini became a hero among the Sunderland fans after he scored in the Tyne-Wear derby and then in the League Cup win over Manchester United. He also scored in the all-important win over West Bromwich Albion, which ensured the Black Catsai??i?? safety in the Premier League. Borini ended the season with 10 goals in 40 appearances as he stepped up and performed in all the big matches for Sunderland last season.
The forward is now keen to return to Liverpool and establish himself at the club. The Italian is believed to be keen to extend his stay at Liverpool and his agent has confirmed the same.
But Sunderland are eager to sign him permanently and reports suggest they are willing to pay to up to A?14million for the forward. The Italian international will be restricted to a role on the bench at the Merseyside club next season following the arrivals of Rickie Lambert, Adam Lallana and Lazar Markovic, and Liverpool are looking to offload him as well.
Liverpool will look at it as a good business having signed him for A?10.5Ai??million from Roma. Moreover, his departure will also cut down the wage bill and make room for further additions in the squad. Initial reports suggested that Liverpool had reached an agreement with Sunderland and all that remains is for Borini to agree personal terms. But Gus Poyet has now revealed that the deal is being held up by Boriniai??i??s insistence to stay at Anfield.
Sunderland are still keen on signing him and Poyet considers him to be one of his targets this summer.
“We’re waiting but there’s nothing I can tell you because there’s no more than last week, no less than next week probably. It’s still ongoing.
“We will keep working because we know him very well. Fabio ticks all the boxes because we know what we are going to get.
“We’re still confident it is going to happen, but the longer it goes, the more we have to look at other options because that’s my job. But every time you are about to make a step forward (with another target) you stop because you still want Fabio.
“It cannot happen that we are left with nobody though. It is a position we need to improve, but there are other positions we are looking at as well and I am working very hard to get the rest of the players we need.” ai??i?? The Sunderland manager said.
