Liverpool FC- A Look At What Has Gone Right For The Reds

Liverpool FC

The two Merseyside clubs- Liverpool and Everton, and Southampton, Ai??have come a far way from the last edition of the campaign and have much to be proud of so far. The target for Liverpool remains Champions League berth for next season and while the zoo talks of managers calling their clubs, or the others’ ‘title contenders’ continues, Brendan Rodgers has maintained time and again, that Liverpool’s priority is getting to the prestigious European competition next season.

The Reds have benefited from some very good results this season. The 5-0 whitewash of Tottenham at White Hart Lane, the 4-0 thrashing of Merseyside rivals Everton at Anfield, and most recently the 5-1 thumping of Arsenal at Anfield, which also saw the most glorious first 20 minutes for Liverpool (where the scoreline read 4-0, in favor of the Reds), has resulted in oppositions viewing Liverpool as title hopefuls but the fact remains that Liverpool’s priority is being in the top 4 at the end of the campaign. These results, however, have tampered with the expectations of the supporters and Liverpool fans are daring to dream of a number nineteenth league trophy in their collection.

Here is a look at the positives Liverpool can draw from their campaign this season:

1. An effective strike partnership

There have been many debates as to whether the famous ‘SAS’ partnership is the best in the league or not. While the Suarez-Sturridge partnership might not be the best according to many, it certainly is very effective.

With Suarez, Liverpool always had a magician. However, Suarez didn’t have the best finishing in the league, especially in Kenny’s time. Liverpool had in their hands a magician, who was more a playmaker, than a poacher or a conventional striker. Somehow this season, Suarez has dramatically worked on his finishing and has made sure it is not into questioning again. And with the companionship of Daniel Sturridge, who since his arrival last winter has completely shut the critics, Suarez has become even more lethal in front.

The two have a dynamic chemistry in front of the goal and end up tormenting opposition defenses. The statistics prove this point ai??i?? 23 goals in 24 appearances from Suarez, 19 goals in 21 club games for Daniel Sturridge.Ai??In Suarez, Liverpool benefit from a forward who can create something off nothing and can provide the goal scoring opportunity for his fellow attackers, which the Uruguayan has done in plenty this season- the ex- Ajax player has 8 assists in the league so far, one behind top assist grabbers Gerrard and Rooney. And with Sturridge, Liverpool have a traditional striker, who can get you the goals when you want him to. Daniel Sturridge has come a long way since his ‘selfish’ days at Chelsea. He helps in his team’s performance and makes sure that Liverpool as a team benefits. Ai??He has become lethal in all aspects of his game. He has become a team player and looks good enough to be playing for any top side and in any top competition. Brendan Rodgers recently heaped praise at the England forward and praised his finishing

ai???Sturridge is up there with Luis as the best finisher in the league. Everyone recognises that when he is through on goal, youai??i??d be surprised if he misses.Ai??He is outstanding in one versus one situations, and he has great variety in his finishing. Both he and Luis are outstanding goalscorers.Ai??Daniel has consistently shown that when heai??i??s played, he scores goals. Some goalscorers go through different spells, they might not score for six games, then they will go on a run and get maybe seven in 10.Ai??Dan shows if he gets into a rhythm of playing games, he scores goals.ai???

2. Brendan Rodgers- Says the right things, on and off the field

Rodgers has done a truly remarkable job at Liverpool this season

Brendan Rodgers has to be given the credit for Liverpool’s success this season. The ex- Reading and Swansea manager has also come a long way since the dismal start to Liverpool’s season last season. The 41 year old was tipped by the bookies to be the first manager to be sacked last season. Had FSG not been patient, Rodgers would certainly have been shown the door after Liverpool’s first few games itself, as the club were trailing in the bottom half of the table. Thankfully, they were forbearing and got the right rewards. With January reinforcements, Liverpool enjoyed a very favorable latter half to last season. And this season, the Reds picked up from where they finished off.

Liverpool have dropped from the top 4 just once this season, and they climbed back the following week. The club’s success should be attributed to their manager who has done all the right things. Amid very public interest of many clubs in Liverpool’s talisman Luis Suarez and the player’s comments in the summer transfer window, Rodgers managed to keep Suarez in the club for this season. Not only that, the player signed a contract extension. Yes, the 27 year old might leave next season if the Reds don’t qualify for the Champions League, but the fact that he is there in Liverpool and is helping the club with their goal of reaching there, means that the Kop faithful have to show their gratitude to their manager.

Another strong aspect of Rodgers is hisAi??tactical intelligence, that can be illustrated by the fact that he shifted Steven Gerrard into a holding midfield role. After a few shaky games, Gerrard is doing well and strongly in that role.

Liverpool’s performance on the field has been praised time and again and the credit should definitely go to their manager. But what has been most impressive about Rodgers this season is the fact that he has said all the right things off the pitch. While there has been utter madness in the war of words surrounding Chelsea’s Mourinho, City’s Pellegrini and Arsenal’s Wenger, the Reds boss has been refused to be dragged into it and has dealt effectively with all the balls that have been pitched to him. Most recently, he called the mind games and the animal analogies ‘stupid’, but went on to compliment both Wenger and Mourinho. Surviving the wrath of the ‘Rambling Ones’, the Liverpool manager has said the right things off the pitch and has impressed in dealing swiftly with all the mind games.

3. The rise of Raheem Sterling and Jordan Henderson

ai???I believe a young player will run through a barbed wire fence for you. An older player looks for a hole in the fence, heai??i??ll try and get his way through it some way, but the young player will fight for you.ai??? -Brendan Rodgers

Liverpool have a relatively young squad on their hands. The likes of Raheem Sterling, 19; Jordan Henderson, 23; Philippe Coutinho, 21; Daniel Sturridge, 24; means that these players are going to be continuously improving and are not in the peaks of their career. Rodgers is a great believer in giving younger players a go on the field. Liverpool have had three young players feature for them in the league this season: Brad Smith, Jordan Ibe and Joao Carlos Teixeira. While this may have been just a single cameo appearance apiece, it was certainly to show the likes what it is like to play in the Premier League, to inspire the young guns and to make them strive for the best.

If Sterling continues his present form, he might make his way through to Hodgson’s England squad for Brazil

The use of young player have paid off, but two names have struck out as far as resurgence and rejuvenation is concerned- Raheem Sterling and Jordan Henderson.

Sterling was always tipped to do great things for Liverpool. He was regarded as Liverpool and England’s future. He started off great last season. Liverpool’s exceptional failure in the summer transfer window last season meant that the then 18 year old would get a go in the Liverpool first team. He impressed greatly in his first match, which was against previous season champions Manchester City. However, Sterling’s form declined towards the end of last season and people regarded it to be a case of severe burn out. Whatever the reason may be, the England international was not doing well and was therefore receded to the bench. However, this season, Sterling has done exceptionally well, and with Theo Walcott out for the World Cup this summer, the Liverpool captain and manager both have made pleas for Sterling to be included in Hodgson’s England squad.

With Henderson, the case was different. The Sunderland prodigy’s arrival from Sunderland in Kenny Dalglish’s time in charge of the team was met with sub-par performances from the 23 year old. The player looked a little terrified initially, and used to always pass the ball backwards. Even later in that campaign, one could not see what the hype involving the Sunderland man was all about. Towards the end of Rodgers’s first year in charge of the Reds, Henderson started looking more threatening. But it is this season that Henderson has truly proved all his doubters wrong. The player has done so well, especially in the absence of Steven Gerrard, that he has been indispensable in Rodger’s team. Henderson has started all, but one, of Liverpool’s matches this season (in all competitions).Ai??Henderson is the heart of the Liverpool midfield and essential to the teamai??i??s play.

Both Sterling and Henderson still have a long way to go and have areas to work on- mainly their finishing. But the two have been essential in Liverpool’s outstanding form this season and if the duo keeps this up, both might feature for England in the summer.

4. The Belief- Daring to Dream

What has got Liverpool to this place is the belief instilled in them. It may be down to the words of Rodgers, which are ever so inspiring, or it may be due to the efforts of the team to keep Suarez in their club next season or it may just be the sense of realization that Liverpool’s absence from the ‘elite’ competition has been for too long and the club needs to come back to where they belong. Whatever the reason or reasons may be, the Liverpool players play with the grit, determination and character which had eluded them for a three or four long seasons.

On paper, other sides are better than the Reds. The squad strength and the depth and quality in the squads of Arsenal, Manchester City and Chelsea, certainly gives these clubs a huge advantage. However, as of now, Liverpool is playing as well as any other club in the Premier League. The club’s attacking menace, marred a little by the leaky and injured defence, is certainly giving all the other clubs nightmares, and much to Brendan Rodgers delight, opposite teams are terrified of facing Liverpool at Anfield and the ground has become a fortress for the club.

If Liverpool continue with this determination and belief, there is no reason to not think of the club finishing in a higher position than the aspired number four spot.
