Liverpool held Arsenal to a draw after a late goal from defender Martin Skrtel salvaged a point for Brendan Rodgers’ men. After a heavily one-sided affair in the first half, the game turned out to be end to end in the second half and finished 2-2.
Both Liverpool and Arsenal went into the game under some pressure after having an indifferent season so far, but it were the hosts who started really well and showed glimpses of their whirlwind 20 minutes against the gunners last time around when they led 4-0. Liverpool created a lot of chances but couldn’t really test WojciechAi??Szczesny as winger Lazar Markovic, who had the bulk of the chances, often rushed his opportunities. Rodgers went with a 3-4-3 formation once again after his side impressed in the last two games.
Arsenal found it really hard to get on the ball in the first half and failed to test Brad Jones. Their defence was finally breached in the 45th minute when Philippe Coutinho made some space for himself and placed his shot toAi??Szczesny’s left. The goal seemed like a huge sigh of relief for Liverpool who constantly looked for an opening. However, it turned out be a short lived one as Arsenal equalised through Mathieu DebuchyAi??just a few seconds later via an Alexis Sanchez freekick.
The second half was similar to the first but Arsenal looked much better. Although Liverpool dominated the possession once again, Arsene Wenger’s side managed to score against the run of play in the 65th-minute thanksAi??to some neat interplay between Olivier Giroud and Santi Cazorla which ended with the Frenchman putting the ball in the back of the net. Liverpool were not done though as they always possessed the threat of scoring.
With Skrtel’s injury early on in the second half, Liverpool had as many as nine minutes of extra time to find an equaliser and did so despite going down to 10-men after Fabio Borini’s sending off in the first minute of extra time. Borini’s 18-minute substitute appearance ended with a red card, but his side went on to grab the equaliser in the sixth minute of extra time thanks to Martin Skrtel’s well-placed header from a corner.
The draw will not do Liverpool any good as the gap between themselves and fourth-placed team West Ham United is now nine points after the Hammers won their game on Saturday. The same applies for Arsenal as they find themselves four points off the top four. However, considering how the game transpired and the number of chances Liverpool had, the Londoners will probably be happy after leaving Anfield with a point.var
