Jose Mauri: The Next Oriundi To Serve Italy? |Scouting Report

Jose Mauri has been the only bright spot to talk about in Parma’s woeful start to this season in Serie A.

One of the few positive stories to emerge from Parmaai??i??s woeful start to this season has been the displays by 18 year old Italo-Argentine prodigy, Jose Mauri. Ravaged by injuries and a disappointing summer transfer window, Roberto Donadoni had no other alternative but to introduce Jose Agustin Mauri in the heart of the Parma midfield. Far from being fazed by the magnitude of the task, Mauri has displayed immense maturity and composure to grab this opportunity to announce himself as one of the most promising youngsters in Serie A this season. While Parma are struggling at the wrong end of the table, Mauri has earned rave reviews for his displays for a side that look horribly out of sorts since the beginning of the season.

Career History

Jose Mauri left the province of Realico at a tender age of 13 to join Parma. He left his family, friends and the safety of his neighborhood to make a name for himself as a football player in Italy. Premier League giants Manchester United were interested in securing his services in 2011 just like they did for Pierluigi Golini, Davide Petrucci, Federico Macheda and Giuseppe Rossi. The weak Italian regulations cannot prevent the foreign clubs from poaching away young talents and when it seemed that Mauri was the next to join the list, he made the decision to stay put. Mauri remained unflustered and was insistent that he could become a professional player even without the glitz and glamour of donning a Manchester United shirt. Mauriai??i??s determination, application and professionalism at such an age is really praiseworthy and he made his debut last season with Parma. One of the key aspects to his rise has been his willingness to adapt in a foreign environment far away from the comforts of his hometown Realico. His dedication has certainly paid dividends and now he is on the right track to cement his place as one of the most promising youngsters in Calcio.

Style of Play

Jose Mauri has played the most minutes this season in Serie A for a teenager. Short in stature but a gritty ball winner, Mauri offers himself as a versatile midfielder capable of covering multiple roles as evidenced so far this season. He possesses creativity and was deployed in an attacking role in Parmaai??i??s 4-2 loss against Udinese. His performance as a mediano in that game flashing from box-to-box as a potential number 8 was arguably his best this season. His tenacity was on full show when he took up the position in front of his two center backs against Roma. Even though Mauri did not dictate the play from this position, he did a very good job of protecting the back four throughout the game. A busy presence in the middle of the park, Mauri always looks for the ball and recently admitted enjoying his free role which requires a lot of running. Against Genoa, it was Francesco Lodi who was placed as the regista but Mauri put in an industrious shift as a left-sided shuttler. Seemingly capable of covering multiple roles, Mauri is probably best at carrying the ball forward from midfield into a position of danger for the opposition. As he gains maturity in due course of this season he has to specialize in a role but ideally it seems that he is best suited to be a traditional box-to-box midfielder.

Strengths

Mauriai??i??s main strength is his versatility. As already discussed he has covered multiple roles in midfield so far this season which is an indication that Donadoni is trying to develop him into an all-action midfielder. His key attribute is his endless motor and as a capable shuttler he performs the job of taking the channels on either side of Parmaai??i??s regista Francesco Lodi to drag his team up in attack. His ability going forward and scoring goals is an added weapon in his repertoire. His link-up play with left fullback Paolo De Ceglie has been impressive in the games he has started as a left sided mezzala. It is rare to find a youngster performing so admirably in multiple midfield roles at this tender age. Mauri has all the attributes needed to develop himself as a protagonist in his position in a big club. His role in central midfield requires tactical knowledge which he should eventually learn as the season progresses.

Weaknesses

Considering his age and height, it must be mentioned that Mauri deserves a lot of praise for his displays in such a vital position on the field. Generally the position which Mauri occupies is a bit difficult for a player who is short in stature but he has shown already that he is tactically flexible. Against Inter Milan he was trying to overdo things and was guilty of losing possession in dangerous areas on more than one occasion. Still very young and raw, Mauri needs to develop his composure on the ball and learn not to take unnecessary risks while playing in front of the defense. His ability to drive his team in attack is good but he still has to improve on his qualities as a playmaker. With Parma tottering in serious economic difficulties and a poor start, Mauri might find himself at a new club (and a new coach) very soon. It will be interesting to see how his development progresses in the next few months.

Possible Destinations

Parma are reportedly preparing themselves to enter into negotiations with Mauri to extend and improve his contract. His current contract will expire in 2016 and with an annual salary of ai??i??45,000 it is one of lowest in Parma’s first-team squad. Reports in Italy suggest that Italian champions Juventus are trying to take advantage of this situation. The Bianconeri have been keeping tabs on his rise through the youth ranks at the Emilia-Romagna outfit. While the player himself has laughed off this early speculation, Parma will find it difficult to keep hold of this rising star if he keeps developing in this way.

Not only at club level but also at international level Mauri has to make a choice it seems. Mauri was already close to getting a call up for the Azzurrini setup but it was held up by the FIGC procedures. But now they have decided to speed up the process in order to beat Argentina to this talented oriundi. Talks have already begun to get him Italian citizenship so that he can represent the Azzurri.

Verdict

Jose Mauri has all the attributes to develop himself into an all-action midfielder and his progress so far has been really remarkable. It is very important for him to keep playing and nurture his skills properly under a good manager. A move to a big club at this moment will hamper his development so he himself should make a choice very carefully. Mauriai??i??s next step should ideally be the Azzurrini after their Euro 2015 campaign. If he does leave Parma at the end of this season, then a move to a club like Sassuolo or Atalanta will ideally suit his progress and help him keep growing. If he keeps moving forward like the way he is doing then surely he can become a major player in a big club within the next three years. Mauri must keep his feet on the ground and carry on his good work. The rest will fall into place slowly but surely.
