Liverpool FC midfielder Jordan Henderson is set for talks to extend his contract with the club. Meanwhile, manager Brendan Rodgers has suggested the names of Henderson himself and Raheem Sterling as promising candidates for the England squad going for the World Cup this summer.
While Liverpool’s Luis Suarez has garnered most of the headlines for the club, it is Kenny Dalgish’s singing Jordan Henderson who has also not evaded the football watchers’ eyes who have seen the vast strides he has made as a player since his arrival at Merseyside. The 23 year old England international has virtually been irreplaceable in Rodgers’ side andAi??has started every game for the club this season, barring the Capital One Cup tie over Notts County back in August in which he came off the substitutes’ bench and scored in the cameo role.
The Liverpool midfielder will have two years remaining on his current contract in the summer and club officials are likely to meet the player at the end of the season and have discussions with him to extend the deal.
England coach Roy Hodgson called up Henderson into his squad for the friendly matches with Chile and Germany in November and Rodgers believes assistant coach Ray Lewington would have been impressed with the playerai??i??s performances in the League this season, which was summed up by a fine display in the Everton match (where Lewington was present):
“Iai??i??m sure he (Lewington) is looking at Jordan and thinking he is a player who is improving every time he sees him.Ai??Real discipline in the game, looks so composed on the ball, great stature, how he presses is fantastic as it allows the others to play.Ai??Jordan is an outstanding talent and is getting better.
Henderson is yet to work up his goal tally and does have some weak finishing as is suggested by his two goals in the Premier League this seaso. This is an area of improvement for the player and Rodgers has acknowledged it, but has credited the player’s potential.
“I still think Jordan has bits to improve. He needs to get more goals. He understands that, we speak about that, and there is no pressure on him as he makes contributions in other areas.”
Rodgers also said that England assistant manager Lewington would have been impressed with Raheem Sterling as well, after watching the player help the club demolish Everton 4-0 in the club’s local rivalry:
“Iai??i??m sure Ray would have gone away really impressed by both Jordan and Raheem Sterling.”
Club goalkeeper Simon Mignolet has also heaped praise at Sterling recently:
“The gaffer spoke the other day about how well Raheem is doing. He’s very strong and very determined. Raheem wants to do well week in week out and long may that continue.Ai??There are a lot of young players battling to get in the England squad and he’s certainly one of them”.
Henderson and Sterling have both been exemplary this season and if both the players keep up the performances, they could get to be led by club and England captain Steven Gerrard in Brazil this summer.
Indications of a new deal for the ex-Sunderland player being in the pipelines speaks volumes of the improvement he has made this season under Brendan Rodgers. Like mentioned earlier, the player has proved himself time and again with fitness and performance. He is ever- imporving and finishing (scoring) to his game would make it more well rounded and would give his performances a bigger boost. The player especially impressed in the absense of Gerrard and has started enjoying the attacking role.
The new contract suggestions are encouraging and right, with views to Henderson’s quality performances this season.
