Former Old Trafford defender Paul Parker claimed Rooney should be dropped following the arrival of Radamel Falcao.
Wayne Rooney has been named the new Manchester United captain under Louis van Gaal. So far, the new captain and coach have not had a good season as they’ve failed to register a single win in the league and were also knocked out of the Capital One cup by lowly MK Dons. Naturally, there has been a lot of criticism for the 20 time league champions. Attention did shift away as the Manchester club did some eye-catching business in the transfer market and brought in Ai??di Maria for aAi??British record fee, and Radamel Falcao on a one-year loan. Still, fans, pundits and ex-players have not pulled the plug on the criticism.
Latest to join on the rant is former Red Devils defenderAi??Paul Parker, who claims the club should drop him altogether after the arrival of Radamel Falcao. Parker, who made over 100 appearances for the Red Devils between 1991 and 1996, believes that the fact that United have a player like Falcao in their ranks, should signal the end of Rooney’s time in LvG’s team. The 50-year-old especially blasted Rooney’s performance in Saturday’s lacklustre 0-0 draw with Burnley and questioned why he earns a reported A?300,000-a-week at United.
“There he was at Burnley this weekend, supposedly captaining the team – but I saw a player interested only in himself, doing nothing to try and lift his game or inspire his team-mates,” said the defender,” writes Parker in his Yahoo! Sport blog
“The only thing in any way remarkable about his performance is that he collects A?300,000 a week to play that badly.
“Once Van Persie is fully-fit again, Rooney must be the person to be dropped from United’s new attacking line-up: for me, it’ll be RVP and Falcao every time.”
The arrival of the Colombian has left everyone thinking that Juan Mata will be the one dropped to the bench with Rooney playing in the hole behind the two strikers- Falcao and van Persie. But Parker thinks otherwise.
He added, “And though there’s lots of talk about him playing in the hole behind that front two, I think that’d be a huge mistake – why would you have Rooney there when Juan Mata or Angel Di Maria would do the job so much better?”
Parker has asked van Gaal to make the tough decision and drop his captain while saying that the Dutchman is not afraid of making bold decisions.
He said, “That’ll leave Van Gaal with a big call to make: dropping Wayne Rooney. He’s always shown in his career that he’s not afraid of the big decisions; he showed it most recently with his goalkeeper substitution for the shoot-out at the World Cup, and he’ll have to show it once again because the way things are looking there will be no place for Rooney in that starting line-up soon.”
He even said that the player was nowhere on the same level as Sergio Aguero and Diego Costa and should have been sold to Chelsea last summer: “He’s not a patch on the likes of Diego Costa or Sergio Aguero – and as we’ve seen in the past, rather than react by upping his game and sharpening up his act, he’s more likely to down tools and start sulking about his treatment. In retrospect he should probably have been sold to Chelsea last summer – I said at the time that it was probably the right moment for him to move on. It certainly looks like the end of the road is coming soon though.”
