With Romelu Lukaku’s future at Chelsea hanging in the balance, here is a look at what Jose Mourinho and Technical Director Michael Emenalo can do with the Belgian centre-forward.
A lot has changed in one year. On deadline day last summer, Chelsea fans were upset to see Romelu Lukaku leave on Ai??loan to Everton, as they (mistakenly) believed his time had already come. Even more so because the other strikers on the roster didn’t inspire any confidence whatsoever. However, when the disappointment subsided, they realized that they would have been more upset had Lukaku remained at Stamford Bridge but received fewer opportunities than what he got at West Brom. Fans considered him to be one of their own; a boyhood Chelsea fan, who idolized the club legend Didier Drogba and dreamt of playing for Chelsea since a very young age. Deep down, they realized that he is only 20 and his time will come. The move to Everton was seen as perhaps the final stepping stone in realizing that collective dream.
During his immensely successful loan spell under Steve Clark at West Brom, he was primarily a super sub who was brought on later in the second half to destroy the tiring opposition defenders ai??i?? which he did effectively, scoring 17 goals in the process.Ai??His time there had seen him hone his primary assets, his size and speed, and utilize them to devastating effect. He was able to beat a high defensive line using his pace and get the better of defenders otherwise using his sheer power and strength, thereby also improving his hold up play in the process. He was, however, yet to establish himself as a genuine aerial threat, a skillset that a player of his physical attributes must possess. Furthermore, his positioning, finishing and first touch were still a work in progress, and it was thought that nothing could be better to eliminate these weaknesses than starting for a fine club on a weekly basis. The Everton loan deal wasAi??a very good move for Romelu Lukaku.
A year has passed since then. In Merseyside,Ai??Lukaku had a decent season from Everton’s perspective, leading them to within touching distance of Champions League qualification. Yet from the perspective of his personal growth, the 2013-14 season was a mixed bag. He scored 15 goals over the campaign, 2 fewer than what he had managed at West Brom. His average pass accuracy also fell from 72% to 66%, and according to Squawka, his overall score also came down from 736 to 642. Most importantly though, his decision-making on the field was far from ideal, as Lukaku was caught offside 19 times over the season. Also, he had started appearing fatigued by the middle of the season, with his impact diminishing with every passing week. He got a respite through injury, which rejuvenated him to regain his early season form and end the season on a somewhat reasonable high. The year away at Everton, however, wasn’t what it was meant to be – the final finishing school for the Belgian to develop his skills to the point that he becomes the number one striker at Chelsea, similar to the case of Ai??Thibaut Courtois.
Considering he is only 21 today, such criticism can be termed extremely harsh as he did show signs of improvement in all aspects of his game and really benefited from a starting role at a club fighting for European places. However, the truth is that he left Chelsea as a raw but enormously talented striker, and he remains one. Even at the 2014 World Cup, barring extra-time against the US that saw him use his brute power to terrorize the tired US defenders, he didn’t set the stage on fire. As it stands, Lukaku has neither reached the world class level that guarantees him a starting spot in the Chelsea eleven, nor does he show any inclination towards fighting for a place in the team.
The problem here is that Romelu Lukaku considers himself to be a complete player already. Therein lies the problem. This is a dangerous situation for any young player to be in. There is a sense of entitlement in his attitude. Lukaku has repeatedly shown that he doesn’t take competition for places positively and wants a guaranteed starting role, even if that means he has to leave Chelsea for any other club. What he fails to understand is that no top club that aspires to win the league, amongst other trophies, will be able to give him what he wants this season.
He has 2 years left on his present contract, and unless he signs an extension (unlikely in the current scenario), he won’t be sent on loan. Ergo, there remain only two possibilities for Michael Emenalo and Jose Mourinho – either sell him to the highest bidder or retain him. Let’s evaluate each option, with the club’s best interest in mind.
The player has done enough for the world to sit up and take notice. Everton, Tottenham, Wolfsburg, and earlier Atletico (decided to eventually bank on Mandzukic) and Liverpool (on the verge of signing Remy) have all shown interest in acquiring his services. Chelsea value their young striker at aroundAi??A?25-30m, and should they decide to cash in, they’d have made a tidy profit on his sale (Chelsea signed him forAi??A?12m rising to a possibleAi??A?18m based on performances, trophies won, etc.). Didier Drogba has already been extensively linked to a return in a player-cum-coach capacity and in such a scenario, a trio of Costa, Torres and Drogba should be enough to see them through this season. In this case, they would have to shift their focus to next-in-line Patrick Bamford, the young English striker who has scored heavily wherever he has been loaned to (MK Dons, Derby) and is looking increasingly likely to join a Premier League team on loan, if not retained by the Blues as cover in this campaign.
On the other hand, if Lukaku improves his attitude, Chelsea, today, would have absolutely no problem whatsoever in keeping him in the first team squad and letting him complete with new signing Diego Costa, who clearly will be the number one striker at the club. Fernando Torres has been, surprisingly, linked to a return to his boyhood club, Atletico Madrid. This is surprising because Torres has proved to be an immovable asset for the club, mainly because of his enormous wages (A?175000/week) and unless he takes a massive pay cut, he can’t be transferred even if Chelsea were to accept a fee of aroundAi??A?10-15m. If Chelsea do manage to somehow offload him, the resigning of Drogba should give the Blues a strike force comprising of Costa, Lukaku and Drogba; a better set than the one in the first case.
Didier Drogba is also being looked at as someone who can mentor the younger generation going forward, eventually joining Mourinho’s coaching staff, and if he can help Romelu Lukaku clear his mind and refocus his energies on reaching his sky-high potential at Chelsea, Drogba’s second act is likely to be remembered as fondly by the fans as his first, even if he doesn’t set the football pitch on fire. Well, almost as fondly.
