After the confidence-boasting win over Tottenham this weekend, Chelsea are presently sitting at the Premier League summit, 7 points ahead of Arsenal and Liverpool, who have a game in hand, and 9 points ahead of Manchester City, who have played three fewer games. Although all teams below them stand a chance to close the gap at the top of the table, but points on the board at the business end of the season are certainly better than those potentially on the offering.
Although each game in the Premier League is a challenge in itself, of the remaining fixtures, Arsenal’s visit to Stamford Bridge and Chelsea’s away game at Liverpool remain the toughest fixtures for Jose Mourinho’s team, and if push comes to shove, the West London team can be expected to win their other league matches.
The other contenders to the crown have a significantly tougher schedule. Liverpool are yet to take on Manchester United, Tottenham, Manchester City and Chelsea, while Arsenal have games remaining against Manchester City and Chelsea, apart from the highly intense North London Derby. City, on the other hand, have the Manchester derby to contest, in addition to fighting it out against Liverpool and Arsenal. Ergo, at this stage of the season, Chelsea are best placed to recapture the title they last won under Carlo Ancelotti.
Irrespective of whether Chelsea go on to win the league or not, Jose Mourinho will undoubtedly take the maximum plaudits for this change in domestic fortune (Chelsea hadn’t even been in contention for the title in the last couple of years), but over the season when the going got tough, quite a few players raised their hands and powered their team to a victory, when a draw or a defeat appeared to be the more likelier result. We take a look at few of these season-defining performances.
Andre Schurrle v Fulham
Before Chelsea destroyed Tottenham at home, they looked destined to settle for a dull draw at home to Fulham, after a toothless first half. Jose Mourinho didn’t speak a word during the break but managed to still convey his message in an emphatic manner, as Andre Schurrle (who’d till then slept through the first half despite receiving minimal opportunities to impress before this game) suddenly woke up from his slumber and tore the Fulham defence to shreds with his decisive runs and clinical finishing. In a matter of 17 second half minutes, Schurrle scored a breath-taking hattrick, putting on a show that’d have made any striker worth his salts proud. Ai??He received quality assistance from Eden Hazard, who was the provider for the first two goals, but it was the German’s ruthless finishing that remained etched in our memories even after the game got over.
John Terry v Everton
Before this game, Terry had missed three matches straight because of injury, and Chelsea’s defensive aura was brought down by a couple of notches by his absence. His return coincided with yet another clean-sheet as the home team nullified the Everton attack. Despite the solid defensive performance, this match was destined for a draw till the last few seconds of injury time. It was then than the captain met with a Lampard free-kick and Howard to unable to keep the ball out. The Premier League later awarded the goal to Lampard, but not before the captain had led from the front, denying Everton a rightfully deserved point and extending his team’s lead at the top of the table. John Terry has been immense this season and this performance helped his team grab a win from the jaws of mediocrity.
Samuel Eto’o v Manchester United
The signing of Samuel Eto’o in the summer, when many were expecting Chelsea to sign an existing not a yesteryear’s superstar, still continues to divide opinion. His exploits on the 19th of January, 2014, however have made him a part of Chelsea folklore forever. Every hattrick is special, but the one against Manchester United deserves special recognition. This was, after all, the first Chelsea hattrick against United in six decades. United have been poor this season under David Moyes, but are still the defending Premier League champions, and Eto’o brought all his experience to the fore, as he struck thrice one after the other to give Chelsea an unassailable 3-0 lead in the match.
Nemanja Matic v Manchester City
Chelsea had been short of a world-class central midfielder for quite a while now Up until January, none of the options that Mourinho had at his disposal were sure-short starters irrespective of the nature of challenge. If you needed to close a game or provide defensive solidarity at the back without worrying about quick transition from defense to attack, there was Mikel. If you wanted energy and pace in the middle, you called upon Ramires, while if experience was the need of the hour, Lampard was your go-to guy. Others such as Essien had become to inconsequential to even ponder about about. Then, Chelsea decided to right the wrong and resign Nemanja Matic from Benfica. And, in his first start after resigning for Chelsea, Matic did to Yaya Toure what Yaya Toure had been doing to all that came in his way – destroy.
Eden Hazard deserves a mention for this game as well, as he humiliated any City player who dared to come near him and was untouchable on the day, but it was Matic’s sheer midfield dominance that allowed Hazard and Co. to wreck havoc at the other end. In a complete midfield performance, the 6’4″ Serbian won 4 tackles, made 8 clearances and 4 aerial duels, completely subduing and overpowering Toure and helping Ramires in neutralizing the influence of Silva. He even swiftly launched counter-attacks and played some delicious balls forward and to wrap up the show, he unleashed a rocket of a shot from distance that hit the bar.
This was a season defining match for Chelsea and their new star delivered a season-defining performance.
Eden Hazard v Newcastle
Eden Hazard has been absolutely magical this season. The constant factor in each of the above mentioned performances or any decent show from Chelsea for that matter has been the influence of Eden Hazard. Ever since Mourinho challenged him to work harder and become the best player in the world, the Belgian has taken the league by storm. He has been the focal point of the Chelsea attack, their primary weapon, their inspiration. On his day, and those days have become more and more frequent as the season has progressed (showcasing his consistency), he is unstoppable irrespective of the number of men a team commits to him or the strategy they deploy. He beats defenders by his trickery, if not his sheer pace; by his close ball control, if not by his vision. What’s more impressive is the fact that he does all this without actually compromising the defensive setup of the side, by tracking back and making key interceptions himself higher up the pitch.
According to Mourinho, the boy had been doing the same week in week out, but the world stood up and took serious notice only after the game against Newcastle. Against Newcastle United, the Belgian supplemented his overall impact with goals – and not one but three of them! Hazard scored a breathtaking hattrick to complete a dominating Chelsea performance and along the way, established himself as a serious force to be reckoned with in world football.
