Arsene Wengerai??i??s contract runs out this summer and his future remained uncertain as Arsenal’s Premier League title challenge has unravelled in recent months, leading to reports that Wenger might be ready to leave after 18 seasons in charge.
However, the 64-year-old now looks certain to extend his tenure at the Emirates Stadium after a season which could end with the FA Cup trophy.
Asked in an interview with beIN SPORTS, broadcast on Talksport, whether he would stay or go at the end of the season, Wenger replied: “Look, I have said that many times already, I have given my word to this club and that I want to continue where I am ai??i?? that means to stay.”
Wenger has already assured the Arsenal board that he is staying on, despite stalling on signing a new contract offer which has been on the table for months.
While he has also stated publicly recently that he would stay – he had added the caveat: “Unless I decide otherwise.”
Arsenal host Newcastle on Monday night, looking to cement their place in the top four of the Premier League ahead of Everton. Thomas Vermaelen is expected back from a hamstring problem but Abou Diaby will not be rushed into a return from a serious knee injury. He reported a slight groin problem after playing for the under-21s in midweek, his first action since suffering a cruciate ligament injury against Swansea in March 2013.
“Diaby played one half [for the under-21s]. How far away he is is difficult to say, but he had a little groin problem after the game so will not be available for Monday,” said Wenger.
Wenger arrived at Arsenal in 1996 and will attempt to win the club’s first trophy since 2005 when his side face Hull in May’s FA Cup final.That match could prove to be Bacary Sagna’s final game for the club, with Wenger conceding that Arsenal are no closer to agreeing a contract extension with the French defender, who joined from Auxerre in July 2007.
The 31-year-old’s deal expires in the summer and he has been linked with Inter Milan, Paris St-Germain, Galatasaray and Manchester City.
Wenger also spoke about the life of a coach in English football following the sacking of David Moyes and insists managers are not given enough time.
“If you want quality people in any area, you should give them the time to develop and become actually good,” he toldAi??L’Equipe.
“Or else, quality people will not come in the future. The average life expectancy of a coach in the Premier League is eleven months. It’s very unstable.”
The Arsenal boss also admitted he was surprised with the way Manchester United handled Moyes’ exit, with many newspapers reporting his departure the day before it was confirmed.
“It is very surprising. In this kind of situations, you want the coach to be the first to know.
